Prompt 60 The Rolling Stones – 19th Nervous Breakdown

HU003021

When I first met you

I didn’t know the person

You’d turn out to be.

The need you had for attention

At all costs, bugger the expense

Dismissive of the demise of those around you.

The innocent girl, so I thought,

Waiting forlornly on the bus stop.

I opened my door to let you in

You stayed so many years

My altruism so misplaced

I was a slow learner

For all the while you were

Trying day and night to rearrange my mind.

It is true in hindsight to say

You were a spoilt child

Given to tantrums, irrational thought

The product of your fathers own

Self professed perfection.

It was at the end of school

That your life was totally messed

An act that changed you forever

One you could never forget

Nor get a handle on

That lost innocence,

You tried to reignite

In subsequent lives you generated

To no avail, as what was lost is lost

No amount of penance

Would ever restore it

So we lived with guilt,

Shame, loss, wonder,

Accusations of betrayal

By him who could as you said

Have changed everything but didn’t.

Even the return of the prodigal

Did little to change your ingrained attitudes.

I learnt to live with my decisions,

You struggled, railed against

Everyone you thought wronged you.

Now you live in a shadow world

Isolated from those you should love

Surrounded by a pseudo family

Who pretend, see the fake you

Think they see and know you.

We tried to reach you,

But for insane, psycho, whacko you

Nothing seems to work.

Its been more our nervous breakdown.

  1. Wow Michael this packs a gut-wrenching emotional punch and the writing is of the highest quality. Excellent song choice as well.

  2. Gabriella's avatar Gabriella says:

Sadly the misery of one often brings more misery to those around them. It often takes a while to realize you cannot save them from themselves and in the meantime you have been damaged too. You have shown it well. I am sorry you have had to go through all this.

    • Thanks Gabriella. Our pasts are just that, our pasts and we are the people we are today because of what we have been through. Mine was mine and has led me here Gabriella where I have met lovely people such as yourself. Have a good day.

  3. I can only concur with what Yves and Gabriella have said Michael. Very strong write, bringing up a painful past.

  4. JackieP's avatar JackieP says:

Strong writing Michael, of a not very pleasant time. Good thing it’s in the past.

  5. Bravo for getting out that punch and glad you are happier now as well, Michael.

  6. RoSy's avatar RoSy says:

When people are the cause of nervous breakdowns – it’s time to get rid of them.
Easier said than done – I’m sure.
