You should not be doing that
Is that how we brought you up?
I am not interested in the norms of society
A world governed by fear
What will the neighbours say?
What will the priests think?
That play is not suitable
We thought you were better than that.
I wore my hair long
I went to other churches
I stayed out late, experimented
Read whatever was banned.
We don’t want you near that person
They are clearly not like us, unwashed as they are.
We moved in together
My mother was aghast
You should be married
But I didn’t care, we were in love.
It’s not natural to live that way
You’ve upset your mother being that way.
I made mistakes, blunders a plenty
Met plenty of wolves, gold diggers too
Penniless at times, destitute as well
No regrets, my problems, my solutions.
I think you’ve wasted your life
I hoped you’d amount too much more.
I know I am odd, different, unusual
But I’m happy and content
I’ve taken risks, blazed a new life
I am who I am.

This is close to home … As long as our different life style or ways don’t cause others harm or to ourselves, live and let live. You made me laugh at the unwashed…pop always says that 🙂
Always good when you can connect Jenny. Thanks for reading.
A true cloud walker…not an easy way to be in a world with fixed rules for everything…think we had more cloud walkers in our generation than the later ones…but I might be wrong there! Great job! I think you might want to correct a typo…I’m thinking it should be We don’t WANT you near that person 😉
Great I love this it speaks to me realms and I wish more people didn’t conform to others expectations but found their own niches and what makes them happy I was ruled too long by my parents wants and wishes it suffocated and stifles x
Yes Justine you and many others. Thanks so much for reading.
“No regrets”, indeed! Life is too short for regrets. What is past cannot be undone so there is no pint in living there.
Agree totally Gabriella. Thank you for your comment.
Apart from being beautifully written you said it, you took risks which implies you made decisions and in life you have to take risks and make decisions or you´re stuck. Some decisions might turn out good other not, we learn from our mistakes we grow from our mistakes, and we move along.
Couldn´t agree with you more, specially since I done it myself, felt identified with this.
Thanks Charley, I appreciate you stopping by to comment. I think life is a whole series of risks some you choose to take others you turn your back on and sometimes regret the missed opportunity.
True, one might turn his back to certain opportunities, but at the end of the day regret will only make you miserable. So I decided to just keep moving forward, and open my eyes on a day to day basis, knowing you have to have a game plan in life, but it is compatible with living day by day and having your ears and eyes open. Makes it that much more interesting and a little more of advantage at seeing small opportunities you might miss otherwise.
That’s an excellent attitude to have Charly. I wish you well.
Thank you sir
I was with you until the end where we diverged. I have become hopelessly middle class and I hate it.
Thanks nessa, oh well someone has to be middle class. Thank you for reading.
Ah, making one’s own way in life is sometimes difficult. Being different is still frowned upon all though most would say not. Now people are all ‘different’ the same way. I liked this, I like the different person you wrote about. In the end that person will be happier and have less regrets I believe. Well written Michael.
Thank you so much Jackie. I appreciate as always you dropping by. I agree that person does have less regrets today.
Interesting poem…. I could definitely feel what they were saying. I hope you are well Michael 🙂
Thanks Courtney. I am well today.
Rebellion at its best. You say no I say yes. The thing is in the end there’s no regrets for he live as he wanted. Well expressed.
