It was a dismal day for a birthday
The rain came down, the plans were soggy
All thoughts of outdoor fun were running down the drain.
The games to play, the gifts to unwrap
The cake mum had made so painstakingly,
Sitting abandoned, on a once-promising day.
Her friends turned up, some cancelled,
Too wet their mums not allowing them to get drenched
She sat at the window watching Gran’s magic dragon
Slide and descent the window
And with a tiny puff of smoke climb back up again.
At least she had something to entertain her friends
As the bunting, the streamers, the balloons
Looked the worse for wear as the skies tumbled down.
Her few friends gathered at the kitchen table
The cake was cut and eaten with delight
Then they saw the dragon, wanted to watch, some to touch
But when he scorched their fingers, they pulled back
Squealed with wonder and watched as again he climbed,
And when at the top opened his mouth and let fly a fireball
Of a size, you might not believe.
It turned out a memorable afternoon,
Each child returned home with not just a lolly bag
But stories of a dragon breathing fire and climbing the window.

I love dragons. Wish that were my birthday party.
Oh well a little imagination and it can be.
Good answer. I threw a dragon themed baby shower for my best friend. Her son is “Baby Dragon” and has lots of dragon stuff.
Maybe your next birthday could be your turn? Maybe hire a smoke machine?
Probably not. Turns out we share a birthday party now. It will always be his turn. He came 3 days early, though. That is, 3 days before my birthday.
Gotta love dragons! Don’t see any reason why they can’t play outside. Just put them in their swimmers and let them have fun in the rain 🙂
delightful … I took a take when I saw this picture as it looks rather like me at that age … not me tho!
Someone left the cake out in the rain at MacArthur Park.
Good comment Jim
Another charming story Michael.
Thanks Di I somehow saw her at a birthday 🎂
She has the most stunning eyes doesn’t she.
I was at that party 💜
Completely different take on the photo prompt. Loved the positivity in the post.
Cheers

Thanks so much.
Sounds like a very cool birthday. Sad, the other children didn’t come, but it seems like their loss as the cake was delicious and the dragon stole the show. I remember having early birthdays and having it rain for parties, that was always the worst. School ended in June, but my birthday is mid-July, but for some reason, party or actual ‘day’ of my birthday in July it often rained. Great story I loved the rhyming and the flow.
Thanks Mandi I appreciate you stopping by
