Despair comes to mind
Cast into a pit of loneliness
Left to wallow
In a mire of my own excrement.
Self inflicted I was told
Deserving of nothing
A pitiless,
Laughing stock,
A herald of shame.
I had become content
Rolling day after day
In the hopelessness I knew was mine,
Until I heard you call.
Your gentleness awoke me
Startled me, I was taken aback
Used as I was to more strident voices.
You picked me up
Carried me far from that putrid hole,
Cleaned, clothed and fed me.
You watched as I ate
Ravenous
Animal like for
I had forgotten the nuance of kindness.
At first I suspected you
To at any minute turn on me
Cast me back into my abyss,
The moment you discovered
The creature that I was.
But you understood
Listened to my story
Stroked my brow
Nestled me in your bed
Accepted who I was.
I am grateful,
Thankful
I didn’t know heavenly bodies existed
Within my world,
Let alone love me as you do.
I now have a future
One where hope, love,
And compassion are my reality.
Those dark forbidding doors now locked
Their unspeakable hideousness cast
Into a turd filled existence
Of their own.

You’re very welcome.
What a wonderful story you have woven Michael. One filled with despair and loneliness to one filled with love and acceptance. So nicely done!
Thanks Jackie life can turn in that way, even in old age!
YAY for hope!
Thanks RoSy, yes you never have too much hope.
What a beautiful story!! I started reading and felt so sad for the pain inflicted on this person and it turns into a beautiful love story. Very hopeful and romantic.
Thanks Oliana. Lovely comment.
This person is lucky to have found someone like that. I had to be that someone for myself. It isn’t nearly as romantic.
Powerful poem!
