Poem 108 – Awake

abstract-illustration-of-the-human-eye-at-night-david-gifford

Four a.m.

Headache

Wide awake

Expectant.

For what?

Silence

Pervades

I sit, watch, listen.

Lights flash

A car

Peace shattered

Sound drifts

Order restored

Nothing

Silence.

Monotonous whirl

The fan

Rotates on its axis

Never wavering

Relentlessly spinning

Going no where

Serve provided.

Me?

Awake,

Monotonous thought

A merry-go-round

Going somewhere

Not sure when

Not sure how.

Sleep evades me

Uses?

Nil.

Service for?

You? Me?

No one?

Have you tried counting sheep? Ha-ha! Sorry, couldn’t resist. Nice poem for 4am writings, Michael.

Good read. We’ve all had that annoying middle of the night wake up, haven’t we? I was recently advised by a friend that meditation and deep breathing can put us back to sleep… counting sheep stimulates the mind πŸ˜‰

    • I agree meditation is a good tool to employ. As for counting sheep it numbs your mind and out of sheer exasperation you give in and fall asleep to be rid of the sheep. Thanks Charlie you have a good day down Melbourne way.

  3. You seem to have a fair bit on your mind of late, I have no advice as I think you would have tried them all 😦 meditation as Charlie said is meant to work, or chuck down a tablet lol. Hope you are sleeping better, nice indication of insomnia.

This sounds all too familiar & I don’t like it. I mean I don’t like that it happens – the headache – not being able to sleep.
I do like your poem. πŸ™‚
    Pain-free sweet dreams.
