Art Work © Lucas Grogan October 2013
My son Lucas stayed with me on the weekend and I asked him to do a drawing for the poem below.
I have been watching you,
Lying about gazing at the television
What is it you watch?
What captures you for so many hours?
You scurry away from me
Away from reality.
To me you watch a series of dribbling programs
That craze your brain
Lay waste our lives.
Oh but to crawl in there
Understand the goings on,
See what you see
Consider why, why you are who you are.
But all access is denied
Rather you are content to hide
Cower when addressed
Defend the indefensible.
One day soon I shall discover
Much to my horror
You have secretly left me
Deserted our sinking ship,
Abandoned me,
No life raft
To flounder.
I shall wonder who was that person
Who once enthralled me.
On whose every word I hung.
Now there is but
The flotsam and jetsam
Of our contentment.
While you bounce in your life
I sink further.
Soon I shall hit rock bottom,
Soon it will be over.

A grim write Michael. The brain by Lucas quite fitting for your words. Hopefully not reality TV – when they are so obviously trying to escape…
Yes it is a bit grim Jenny, but just came out that way.Lucas was feeling a bit under the weather at the time.
think we have all been there – the person whom you are writing about…and Lucas 🙂
actually I’m not writing about anyone in particular, it just happened this way, my dark side took over and here we are.
Weighs heavy on the heart this one, powerful writing
Thank you, didn’t start out this way…but sometimes you have to go with where the muse is heading.
This piece started off so light and innocent and then plunged into a deep abyss. The shift in tone and mood is remarkable. Fantastic piece.
Thank you Cubby, yes you are right it started in one place and ended up a long way from there……when my muse talks to me i just have to listen to her!!
That’s the best way to do it! 🙂
Thank you.
I see you & Lucas put your brains together on this one 🙂
Tv can be so addictive & hypnotizing.
Thanks RoSy.
What a journey this piece takes us on – from what seems humorous to what is melancholic – great stuff Michael!! 🙂 🙂
Thanks Helen, as i have said above it where the muse took me, never set out this way, in fact I can remember setting out in one direction and finding my original intention being overruled, strange but true.
The muse is often mercurial like that I find!! 🙂 🙂
Gosh. You took me on a bit of a journey with this one. I feel in need of tea and valium. But it is most beautifully written.
Thanks Pooky, I promise tomorrows effort will be a smoother ride.
Thanks! I love dark poetry, I just wasn’t expecting this to get quite so dark. It is wonderfully written. It lures you in (then beats you round the head!)
Oh Pooky you are too kind, tomorrow’s will leave you all soft and mushy……that be better……?? At least yuo wont be needing a valium!!
Ha ha! I look forward to that 🙂
Ahhh….the American marriage….especially when football season lowers our IQ to that of tackle and catch…..
Thanks miss gimpet. If that’s was all it was.
