TELL ME A TALE IN 120 WORDS

tmat120

A new year’s resolution you’ve never been able to keep.

I stopped making resolutions after making one to be a better husband only to discover my wife didn’t make any reciprocal one.

The result was making an obvious effort and my wife using that effort and her knowledge of my resolution to criticise my every move.

It was a pointless exercise and led me to believe resolutions were a useless exercise when they could so easily be broken.

I found it troubling when I reslised I was no longer complying with the resolution plus there was a period of guilt when I understood the futility of my actions.

Since that day I determined it was far more constructive for me to resolve to be as good as I could be.

Tale weaver – #153 – The New Year – 4th January 2018 – New Year’s On Grimace Street.

342289398_ddfd22d1a5_b

When the New Year arrived the annual New Year’s bash took place on Grimace Street.

So often it was about leaving the past behind and moving on with the new.

Alice Hopkins had had a poor year. She was getting old and her age was catching up with her.

“Its me legs,” she say to anyone bothered to listen, “they don’t hold me like they used to. Got to sit down more often than I want to and things just don’t get done.”

She looked around her and anyone who had known Alice over the years knew she was a great gardener and her yard was always a picture of care and health. Today it was overgrown and her scrubs were in need a good pruning and now cascaded over the front fence and across her front path.

Miss Marble the street’s resident witch knew enough these days not to interfere too much in the ways of nature. She had great affection for Alice, many was the hour the two had sat together of an evening mulling over the ways of the world and the health of the street.

There came a time, Miss Marble knew, when death visited and you had to allow it to do what it did best, collect the soul and leave the body behind for the living to grieve.

Miss Marble knew Alice’s days were numbered and even though she was generous in giving Alice some potions to help her sleep and to act against any pain she knew well enough not to stop nature having its way.

So this New Year, Miss Marble met with her neighbours and brought in the New Year. Some made resolutions, some didn’t and most had more to drink than they should have.

Alice she noted sat to the side and watched the festivities. Miss Marble sat with her as the clock struck the start of the New Year and held her hand.

The two women didn’t need to say much, they both knew this would be Alice’s last New Year and Alice was accepting of that.

As the neighbours danced around in celebration, Alice placed a hand over Miss Marble’s and said, “ Thanks dear friend, you’ve been good to me.”

“It’s what friends do,” replied Miss Marble, wishing her friend well.

FFfAW Challenge-Week of January 2, 2018 – Knee Deep in Water

photo-20180101163157940

Image: J.S.Brand

When I died the first words I heard were, “Its okay dying happens to all of us. It’s no big deal, get ready for what happens next.”

Looking around there was a lot of mist and a barrel. In the barrel were marbles and then it began spinning. It stopped, and a marble fell to the floor.

“Number 25,” said a voice.

“Get ready,” said another voice into my ear, “You don’t have long.”

“Here are the rules, follow them diligently,” announced the first voice.

I looked at the piece of paper. “Look elegant, ponderous, stand knee deep in water and oh, gorge yourself on the occasional fish.”

When I relax, I can feel something around my feet and then a bite that really hurts.

Photo Challenge #195 – Inside the Drama of a Life.

deus_ex_machina_by_davidschermann-d64wgqz

Image: – davidschermann.com

She lives a life so much a soap opera.

It comes naturally to her

Angst, emotion, she thrives on the concepts.

Her friends are not true friends

She can never allow them to be so

As she needs them to be pliable.

If today she is loving then so are they

If today she is down then so are they

If today they are indifferent, she doesn’t care.

Her head is stuck in inside the drama of her life

She brings it to each day

Nothing ever right, a crisis about to occur.

She craves an emotional moment

Attention lavished on her

Her head turns to camera, maximum effect.

#JusJoJan Daily Prompt – January 2nd, 2018 – Boisterous

jjj-2018

Family dinner night and the grandkids come bouncing through the door, each shouting in their uniquely boisterous way “Hello Grandad.”

They rush in to find the toy box and joyfully pull every toy out before deciding what play they will make with the selected toys.

Then there is a boisterous tug and fro over one toy, each child claiming they had it first. Their voices rise with the growing frustration of each not getting what they want.

Their mother intervenes and for a moment there is a lull as a solution is found. Grandchildren four, five and six arrive and one being the older of the grandkids is immediately set upon by his younger cousins. He produces his latest piece of technology and I’m grateful for him as he is able to quell the mounting pressure within the room.

They sit around him as he shows them the game that occupies their minds while we adults discuss family issues.

Suddenly grandchild two breaks away and returns to the toy box and there find there is no competition and so takes the plastic hammer and begins bashing everything he can see. He attracts the ire of not only his mother but his cousins and before long boisterous once again becomes the family norm.

Twittering Tale #65 – 2 January 2018

img_0355

It was an amazing experience. The pool was like a warm bath.
I slipped in and immediately felt its healing qualities.
I called to my friends who hesitantly removed their clothing and joined me.
The pool left us reinvigorated.
Marcy said I never looked so attractive. (264 characters)

#JusJoJan 2018, the 1st – Drama

jjj-2018

The trouble with living in the future is the drama associated with knowing what is coming before it arrives in another part of the world.

I could just blab about it but then I think why spoil the surprise?

So, I keep my mouth shut and act surprised when I read the papers and find the American press is reporting something new which I know has already happened here.

There is a disadvantage too in that when writing for a prompt such as this I’m writing as if today was yesterday. That is no mean feat I have to say. My brain is in constant conflict saying write as if today but I say no, they think I’m like them and I have to maintain that illusion.

So that’s my jot for today/yesterday.

Bonus Wordle “New Years” – The Annual Mindlovesmisery’s New Year’s Bash

bonus-new-years

This week’s words: Sparklers Flute  Champagne  Gala Midnight Kiss Effervescent  Gold  Invitation  Gown Chanel No. 5 Enchanting

There was nothing as exciting and as invigorating as the annual New Year’s bash at the Mindlovesmisery headquarters tucked away in the enchanting end of the WordPress Blogland, just beyond the Book of Dictionary and the Word of Thesaurus.

Everyone who was someone was there most shyly making their way around the room nodding politely to the bloggers they recognised and sizing up which ones they would seek a midnight kiss from when the clock announced the incoming year.

This year Pat the Wildchild was the host and had laid on a veritable spread of pre-dinner tasty eats, to be followed by even tastier dinner eats and then to top it all off the golden moment when she would present her effervescent pavlova dessert topped with fruits and ice-cream of whatever flavour you desired.

The big moment of the gala event arrived when the guest of honour the beautiful Yves arrived on the arm of her love and companion, Sam. This year she was wearing a stunning gown and had showered her gorgeous self in Chanel No 5 much to the envy of all others present.

There was a minor confusion when the champagne flutes were not available, but that was quickly rectified, and it soon was forgotten as the champagne flowed.

The doorman who was a strict sort of fellow challenged summerstommy when he arrived as his invitation had been damaged in the wash prior to his departure for the party and so when he presented his invitation in its very ragged form there was a moment when he may not have been admitted had it not been for the intervention of Lorraine, who actually did appear at the party in her frilly Freudian slip, and vouched for summerstommy, thus allowing him to partake in the party which by now was at its lively peek.

As the hour of midnight approached Pat handed out sparklers to the revellers with instructions that when given each attendee was to light and wave them enthusiastically as the sparklers in question were golden in colour and it would provide a wonderful short video for the Mindlovesmisery’s face book page.

As the clock struck twelve the sparklers, which were sparkling to their heart’s content, found Lorraine sidling up to summertommy and insisted that since she had acted on his behalf that she receive a new year’s kiss. Having drunk several flutes of champagne, she puckered up and awaited her reward.

Conversations with Marjorie Nettlespawn 4

ab485273f2affa6368bb1fcc7009fcea--arthritis-exercises-senior-fitness

Marjorie Nettlespawn, my neighbour, came bustling in from her morning walk. In her arms, she held a small bundle of brown fluff.  Marjorie did have a habit of picking things up on her walks like the odd coin or two, spanners and screwdrivers left abandoned by the side of the road.

I was about to ask her what it was she was holding when the ball of fluff moved.

“It’s my new pup, Lindy Lou,” she announced beaming proudly at me.

Now I am not much of a dog person, but I knew Marjorie was and so I was instantly happy for her to have another doggy companion.

“Isn’t she beautiful,” she said looking lovingly at her newly acquired ball of fluff.

She then launched into an explanation of the dog’s breed which I’m afraid went in one ear and out the next. The only bit I found of interest was the historical fact the breed of dog had been bred to warn monks in Tibetan monasteries of intruders.

“I just picked her up yesterday,” she declared, bringing the small dog out onto her lap where it sat looking around at my kitchen and most likely deciding if there was anything worth eating to be found.

Then as if to initiate the dog into my place she asked for a small bowl of water whereupon she placed Lindy Lou on the floor to sniff around and see what she could find. A few laps of the water and she was off and happy as could be. Then Marjorie pulled out a small brown furry bear and set it down on the floor and watched as Lindy Lou proceeded to chew on the bear’s ear.

“So, what have you been up to?” she asked

So, I told her about my New Year’s Eve at home watching all the episodes of Fawlty Towers on Netflix as I waited for No 3 child to call and say she and her family were ready to be picked up from the party they had attended. So, by the time I had done that good deed it was 1.15am and the new year was away and running.

“Don’t really celebrate New Year,” said Marjorie, “just another day for me though there is the excitement of changing the calendar.”

We sat in silence and watched Lindy Lou sniff about the kitchen, chew some more of the bear’s ear before Marjorie announced she was off home via my back lawn as Lindy Lou would need what she called a ‘potty break’ before they returned home.

So off they went after Lindy Lou did, in fact, fertilise my lawn.

The new Year loomed ahead, and I wondered what excitement if any this year would bring me. But as Marjorie had told me so many times before it was all about ‘one day at a time.’
