October 31, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about the Day of the Dead. It can be the Mexican holiday, a modern adaptation of it, a similar remembrance, or something entirely new. Go where the prompt leads!

It was a normal day in the cemetery and being April 31st it was their one day of the year.

As evening settled, the first of the dead began arriving. Old Arthur Jones, long time inhabitant, floated by complaining that as the years past it was harder each year to find the motivation to celebrate. Josie Jones, the newest occupant, found herself being woken by the din above her.

The dead cavorted, dancing to the music of the band, Dead As.

This went on until sunrise when the bodies descended to the cold and discomfort of their resting places.

They had fun for one day!

  2. Reena Saxena says:

Yes. They need festivals to celebrate too 🙂 I wonder if they fear the living or castigate them.

  3. Nice one, Michael. Makes me think of Sumerian beliefs, where wine was poured through funnels into the soil above the burial for the inhabitants to enjoy a change from the usual dust.

  4. Charli Mills says:

Great name for a band of dead souls — Dead As! One night of celebration, new and long-standing alike.
