Prompt #83 “Won” – When Darkness Descends

won

You wont live forever

No one will

It’s an illusion to think so.

You can be here one day

Perfectly healthy

Enjoying life

And gone the next.

Don’t ever think you have to be sick to die.

It was a flash of red

Struck in the neck

I felt the impact

The sudden sensation of pain

Then a numbness

My head swam

I fought to clear it

Then a darkness descended.

I heard them rushing about

Their gentle arms cradled me

Through the haze I heard

Frantic cries for help

But I knew it was too late.

I drifted off, they faded away

Then nothing for so long

Till you appeared

You held my hand

Gained my confidence

Settled my racing thoughts

Reassured me I was ok.

My physical self is gone

This spiritual self lives on

I know I am in their hearts

It’s where I want to be

To ease their burden.

Now you become a memory

Loved ones will treasure precious moments

Honours will flow

You will be missed,

Forever 63 will be your score

408 your number.

Rest easy young man

You left a legacy

Others can only dream of.

This is another tribute to Phillip Hughes who died this week in a very tragic cricket accident.

  1. J says:

I read about that — what a horrible freak accident — but a beautiful tribute, Michael.

  2. What a beautiful tribute Michael and we do indeed live on in other’s hearts, in the opening lines you nail the topic

  3. The Real Cie says:

How very sad. What a lovely tribute to him.
I’m not afraid of dying, but I’m afraid of some of the methods that might take me out.

  4. Lyn says:

That was so beautiful, Michael–even if it did bring me to tears. Such a tragedy. My heart goes out to Sean Abbott. This is something I doubt he’ll ever get over.

  5. Misky says:

A horrible tragedy that you’ve written about so well. A fitting tribute.

  6. What a beautiful tribute, Michael, the sudden loss a tragedy to those left behind, if one has faith, the end is only a new beginning.

  7. Right away I caught on that you were writing from the point of view of the cricket player. That makes it an even more powerful message for all of us. In this way, you are helping him touch all of us, all over the world. And I know little about cricket (baseball, football–yes) and nothing of this young man. Strong message, Michael.

  8. julespaige says:

I looked up the gent. I did not know anything about him. Any death at so young, is tragic.
Even if it occurs doing what one loves.
A fine tribute and fit to the prompt.

  9. beautiful and the first person gives it that looking in from the other side.
Thanks for your visit hope you are doing well 🙂

  10. Sadly we just never know… Wednesday will be a very tough day.
