Darkness lasted five years
Interspersed with moments
Of lucidity
Laughter
Conversation
But the shadow lingered.
Mortality is a shock
We don’t live forever
Even though we think we can,
There is an end.
A month of signposts
Only one place you were going
And I travelled with you
Watching as I was replaced by an
Insidious companion
Who sucked your life away.
Its two years this month since that week
Holding your hand
Seeing you ebb away from me
But even so I lost out
I have gained
Memories last forever
Good times supersede the bad
In my heart you live.

I didn’t used to understand that… because they were no longer in the flesh…but that would not be possible, right?…I know it is a vivid memory for you …take care.
Thank you Kathy, memory is what sustains you, always the good ones.
..forevermorenow..
is a long time now..
Now is love..and the love others give us..
does last forever as long as hearts and memories of hearts rule….
now..
forevermorenow…love goes love lasts..love lives
together lost or found..living in eyes..ears..and hearts
once again…love of life lives again….
So true. Thanks for your comment.
To have to hold a hand and feel that person slip away.. What pain that leads to the inflexion point of healing.. Very well written
Thank you Bjorn. In the end it was more a feeling of satisfaction of having been able to be there at the end.
Through all the sadness, even if expected, mortality is a punch in the belly…you`ve expressed that pain, Michael. In time we do hang on to the wonderful memories, despite the longing.
We certainly do Oliana. Thanks so much for your comment.
I tried to write a poem for this prompt but it just brings up dark memories. Have to just read others and enjoy their creativity on this one.
Sometimes there just isn’t anything for us to draw on and it is ok to sit it out.
Oh memories…They can make one sad – They can make one smile. Or – both at the same time.
Thanks RoSy, what you say is very true.
Five years of darkness… this is very painful to read, as I can imagine it must have been to write. But I’m glad that the good times supersede the bad in your memories, that you have not allowed yourself to grow bitter. Truly touching.
Thank you Marina, I appreciate your comment very much.

Oh yes, at a certain point it is better if one can leave the bad memories behind and allow the good memories to come to the forefront…realizing there are indeed gains from losses, though sometimes difficult to live through.
Thank you Mary it was a difficult time but one I have grown from. Thanks again for your affirming comment.
Very moving and heartfelt poem, Michael. Death is often shocking and tragic but to remain sane we need to be able to remember the good times.
Thank you Gabriella, yes that is so true, though it is the loss that touches you the most. Sanity is always debatable.
Love how the good memories always rise to the surface. Very moving here write here, although times like these steal our youth. We see love in a light where many cannot phantom. Memories.
