Poetry Prompt 65 – Handwriting – My Hand

write-a-poem-which-considers-handwriting

Come to the office please, now!

Can you tell me what this says?

We can’t understand your writing.

You’ll have to write more clearly

Slow down a little

Were you away on handwriting lesson day?

It’s a scrawl I know

Never been anything less than that

Little character

Nothing geometrical

A jumble of swirls and strokes

Acute and ugly angles

Each with a mind of their own

All with the intention of articulation.

Don’t know why I write so poorly

Been a life long affliction

Plenty of wraps on knuckles when younger

From zealous teachers wanting more,

But legibility was not my forte

Constant questions: what does this say?

Thank goodness for word processors I say.

  1. Sounds familiar — my family complains that I should have been a doctor — writing is illegible — but I try so hard!

My mother has very fancy handwriting, so I used to copy her handwriting when I was a child, so mine is pretty good. But my dad’s was bad.

I’m left-handed. That, to me, puts me at an immediate disadvantage — especially when using fountain pen or the old post office pen we used at school. I was the last one in the class to graduate from pencil. My writing now is just legible 🙂

  4. I have so many styles of writing, straight up & down, slanted to the left or right, printed and others. I wonder what that says about me. I was going to say you must be a doctor ~ smiles

I love writing by hand. It feels like painting to me. When I write for myself I add all kinds of flourishes, I don’t care if it cant be read. When I write for others, I print.

    Lovely Michael, great humorous ending.

The first thing i thought of was Prescriptions written in a doctors surgery – before they did stuff with computers… lol

I honestly, would go to the pharmacy and insist they rung the doctor to confirm the name and dose of the medication.

I would not be suprised if people died as a result of the illegible handwriting of doctors.

    • Hello miss Lou lovely to see you. My specialist hand writes his pathology requests which confuse me as to what he is asking for. Handwriting in many ways is becoming a lost art.

I love Handwriting, and try to encourage my children as much as possible to practice. They only get 30 minutes a day on technology so hopefully it will carry on through to the next generation.

I recently engraved my Footy Juniors medals with an engraving pen that one of my parents donated. It took some getting used to, but I was so thankful for my beautiful cursive handwriting at that point!

      • Well good you have that skill Lou, I was never so blessed. Probably why I have never been asked to engrave anything.

      • Miss Lou's avatar Miss Lou says:

Lol, I told all my families in advance that we did not have the money to get them professionally engraved, so they should expect something interesting when they got their medals.

The said that made it all the more special. #BlessTheirHearts!

      • I like that approach. I bet they were and will always be special.

Our signature policy at work is – if it’s illegible – we need to print our name next to our signature.
I am one of those people that needs to print my name next to my signature.
    I think I have nice hand-writing overall though. 🙂
