Conversation/Dialogue in poetry – Pick Up

Airport-pick-up.jpg-de712d067487d8dc6025c3413b72597b

Airports, busy, hustle bustle

People everywhere

‘Attention, flight 4354 from……..’

Arrived, delayed, landed,

Arrivals is crowded, bodies scurrying

Talk about a needle in a haystack.

‘She’ll have a purple top on

You’ll pick her out easy,

She’s a short woman, five foot tall,

Glasses, she’ll be anxious, expects me.’

My boss is busy

Says ‘See here missy

Get out to the airport

The U.S. rep is a good sort

Gather her up, say I’m caught

In meetings which may come to naught

So bring her straight here,

Tell her in the fridge she’ll find a beer

Its good you make sure she’s happy

When you are her happy cabby.’

A woman approaches, not as I expect

Short yes, but dressed to kill I am sure

‘Mr Thomas? I’m Lyn Raydeer.’

‘Sorry I’m not Mr Thomas, he sent me,

I have a car outside, if you’ll accompany me.’

Ms Raydeer, sits in the back seat

Looks out the window, says little

I try for small talk, she’s disinterested.

‘Ya’ll tawrk funny in this country.’

Was all she said, as she stormed off to the boss.

My job complete, I return to my place

I know a smug look sits upon my face.

ha. attitude is everything when you approach new circumstances and cultures…sometimes itis hard to see beyond our own…and it takes effort to bridge that gap…interesting though in what the boss expects…what you expect…what is reality…i wonder what the guests perspective is, you know…

I enjoyed the scene at the airport with her attitude towards the cab driver ~ You know when you are exposed to a several culture & interact with people from different race, you won’t say, you talk funny in your country ~ At least you have done your job, smiles ~

  3. JackieP's avatar JackieP says:

Hmmm I wonder if she would really say you talk funny, or maybe it’s the other way around and the driver thinks she talks funny 😉 Either way a good d’verse Michael.

clear characterization with an interesting twist – that smug look – enjoyed this write ~

  6. How much a cab-driver can tell.. they see all .. understands more than most.. I usually try to converse with my cabbie… always something to learn… always… but I would draw my own conclusions about the boss.. 🙂

I enjoyed the story you told. I am sure cab drivers know a lot.

Not very wise to tell the people in the country being visited that they talk funny. Just saying…..

  15. RoSy's avatar RoSy says:

This reminds me of when I went to the Dominican Republic on business – Some of the expressions that I used with the cab driver. He chuckled & asked if I was Mexican. I told him – well sort of. I’m American. I did eventually tell him that I was of Mexican descent.
    🙂
