This week I have selected this prompt for my haibun:
Today you are you!
That is truer than true!
There is no one alive who is you-er than you!
~ Dr Seuss
I know I could not have picked a more special time of year to come to you. As I look past the doors of the terminal I see the morning sun gathering its strength for the day. There are trees thick with foliage and in the air hangs that breath of expectation I have hung onto since leaving my home so far away.
My eyes scan the waiting hordes of welcomers, some with signs, some craning to see the arrival of their loved one and others standing back as if knowing like the seasons their expected will arrive when good and ready.
I cannot see you at first my eyes wander over the heads of those who look past me to others arriving behind me. I am witness to the delighted calls and cheers of families greeting long lost relatives, the gentle greeting of familiar friends, the nervous shaking of hands of newfound friends.
Through this mass of humanity I spy you. Standing towards the back, your eyes have already found me, you are focused on me, awaiting my discovery of you. The you I have come so far to see. I stop. Mesmerised after all this time, this never-ending journey to be standing in the same space as you. Our eyes meet, for a second there is wonder, then my smile betrays me you know it is me. I step forward, your face lights up as radiant as the spring morning behind you. I drop my bags, your arms embrace me. We are here.
expectations met
a blossom of innocence
present in the now
