It’s midnight
Silence,
Save for
Fingers
Tapping languidly on
Keyboards
Heat permeating
Humidity dripping
Elusive sleep
Tossing and turning,
Will I ever embrace
Peaceful, long sought after
Sleep?
Bleary bloodshot eyes
Salute the morning
My now delirious mind
Imagines far off
Cooler climes
Friendly faces
Greetings warm.
Words flying back and forth
Images created
Drawn in my mind,
Ideas exchanged
Pretentious drivel?
Thoughts explored
You existentialist you.
Your mind exercised
Experiential?
You nod,
You curse
You laugh
The time well
Used
Productive even.
You smile in
Your corner of
The world
Content in the
Knowledge
Your words now have meaning.

Interesting to see your creative process, Michael! I rarely type on the computer after midnight. At that time, I might type on my iPad.
I have an laptop, its easy to sit in bed and work away from the desktop. Ipad is ok but I prefer the laptop. We all write in our own ways don’t we, thanks so much for reading Gabriella.
Good use of the short lines… works very well.. Here it has been the opposite.. had problems heating up … so we had 15 C indoors…and I slept better than ever…
Thanks Bjorn, there is no need to brag about how well you are sleeping…lol….I did sleep eventually around 3am it gets a little cooler so sleep is ok then….and if you take a half of a little pill it all helps. Thanks again for your comment.
Well I was also saying I was freezing… to have 15C indoors is not so cozy…
You are right, I remember a friend of mine saying he lived in an old house and once he woke up in the morning with frost on his blankets, I guess its that cold and more Bjorn, brrrrrrr…..you use an electric blanket?
Oh dear … I know this great “lack of sleep” well.
Hi Raven, thanks for you comment, I appreciate you reading….i did eventually get off.
At least, in the age of computer communication, one has people one can communicate in the middle of the night. There is always a friendly ‘face’ somewhere that one can reach via the internet. I so well understand the idea of “words flying back and forth” with people in other corners of the world!!
So true Mary the poem was prompted by a friend writing at that hour to say she couldn’t get to sleep as it has been so hot here. Thanks for your comment.
Story of my life!
Thanks for your comment. I should say I’m sorry to hear that as not being able to sleep is a curse as I well know, thankfully I have found a little helper in that department.
Very descriptive on how we/you are suffering ~ nice bunch of verbs too 🙂
Thanks Jenny, you can’t beat a good bunch of verbs can you?
I’ve tried but they resist 😉
I too find sleep elusive, darn it. My words are still all jumbled . . . yours definitely have meaning.
Thanks Kathryn, just put a few verbs in amongst your jumbled words and you’ll have it.Meaning most likely as well….
Bloodshot eyes i know them only too well, I love how this just cascades like the tiredness that envelopes. Well done.
Thanks Alan, I appreciate your comment thank you so much.
Worse than insomnia is restless leg syndrome…in that respect you are lucky…enjoyed your poem!
Yes I have heard of that issue, poor you if you are referring to yourself. Thank you Katy for your comment.
nice…hey you might as well make it productive when sleep is illusive…usually i am reading or writing when i cant sleep…to get my mind off whatever it is that is keeping me awake….it does feel good when our words have meaning…
Thanks Brian being a teacher there is plenty to keep us awake. And yes it does give us a good feeling to know our words do make sense to those who read them. Thanks again for your comment.
Sleepless nights can be the bane of existence at times! It is nice that in this day and age we do have friends all over the world who are up. Kind of like the whole “it’s 5 o’clock” somewhere 🙂 I liked your use of brevity in your lines, yet you painted a well formed image for us. I hope you find sleep in the upcoming nights 🙂
Dear ?? What an intriguing name you have….Coal, thank you for your comment, as I take prednisone and it does good things but it also brings you wide awake at 2am I counter it nowadays with another little tablet, I still wake up but I am able to get back to sleep. I like that idea of it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere…lol…must remember that one.
Ahhh…the side effects of prednisone…not fun. I’m glad you are able to get back to sleep with a little help 🙂
Are yes the little half tablet works a treat for me.
It sounds like it all came together for you once you were asleep on your feet. I like getting up to write in the wee hours before I’m all the way awake. Nice verb choices.
Thanks for your comment. Yes I find that early morning period excellent for writing. Thank you again.
This feels all too familiar to me. You’ve chose such appropriate verbs and verb derivatives in this. Thanks for joining us.
Thank you so much Victoria i am enjoying the challenges.
I found myself nodding as I read this, Michael. ~sigh~ turn the fan up a notch, get another glass of cold water, grumble at the dog who insists on sleeping on your feet.
SA, VIC and NSW all had horrendous days yesterday – not going to be much better today either.
We’re expecting 39C for the next few days. At least it’s going to be fairly cool for them in Brisbane for the second one day cricket match against England, they’re expecting a relatively cool 29C.
Thanks Lyn, that’s very comforting knowing the weather for the cricket will be good…lol….yes the weather is not so good right now…stay cool Lyn..
writing through the night and so as if to be right there where the pen takes you… i like getting lost in the writing process… well penned
Thank you Claudia, I appreciate your comment…..
Interesting write. But sleeplessness can sometimes open up the doors of imagination which would have remained shut otherwise.
-HA
so true HA, and last night it did….
Lovely Micheal…I can feel that heat though here we freeze, and know that sensation of wanting to sleep…and yet, it’s such a wonder as the doors of communications open and you find yourself in that special world where insomnia is no longer insomnia but a boon because you’ve shared something of your self and received a wonderful gift in return… love your poem!
Thank you Georgia that is a very kind comment. Thank you so much.
🙂 I’ve not much taliking time, but I do so like your verse and stories!
Thank you Georgia, I hope I can continue to entertain you. You are very kind.
🙂
ha Good poem but I will also say, stop complaining about the heat. You deal with the polar vortex 🙂
I take your point it feels like an equatorial vortex round here…lol…thank you Anja
You spelled my name wrong!!!! *gasp*
One million apologies..its late…ahmmmmm sorry about that…..Anja!!!!
Cool description of the drive behind the creative process!! 🙂 🙂
Thank you Helen it’s amazing what comes out of your head at midnight.
Oh I like these short lines..lots if emphasis on the word like that. I dont take to heat much either…hv to put air conditioner in one room at least. I prefer the cold. But in your disconfort your muse paid you a nice visit.
Yes amazing what it does for you at midnight. Thanks for the comment Oliana.
I know this – but mostly it is of my own making. I put off going to bed – just a few more minutes to write this or that (which becomes hours) or one more site to read…
Anna :o]
Hmm yes it’s easy Anna to get into that situation. Thankfully for me I usually fall asleep about now. Thanks for the comment.
Love how staccato lines punctuate meaning. Nicely done!
Thank you so much Lisa. Please call again.
