This week’s great words: Delve Tonight Murky Reservoir Marinate Commission Stricture (an adverse criticism, an abnormal contraction of any passage or duct of the body, a restriction) Dregs Magniloquent (speaking or expressed in a lofty or grandiose style; pompous;bombastic; boastful.) Frame Tape Lurid (gruesome, revolting)
It had been a slow day. Most days were slow around here until Walter the Word came in. Walter was the most magniloquent guy around. He spoke a language very few of us understood. Then again anyone speaking a language of more than two syllables was testing the comprehensive abilities of every one I knew, me included. The term ‘pain in the arse’ often came to mind when you saw Walter in the street. You used stronger words if he looked like coming near you.
But today Walter was worried, concerned for his friend Athol ‘The Radish’ Dent.’ It seemed The Radish had disappeared and The Word was worried.
There were lurid rumours going about that The Radish had been found marinating in the towns former reservoir where many a body had been dumped over the years. Divers had delved down into the murky depths and uncovered the body of The Radish.
A quick scan of the police radio laid to rest all reports of a rumour, it was now a fact. The Radish was dead.
The Word there and then commissioned me to look into the case. Who would want The Radish dead I asked?
‘Most people,’ replied The Word looking downcast. The Radish had been a valuable sidekick for the Word and a good sidekick was hard to find.
‘Look around you,’ he went on. ‘Any of the dregs of society had it in for him. Life wasn’t easy for the Radish. Each week the paper published reports of his activities and those strictures bothered him. He was a sensitive man you know. He didn’t take to criticism very well. The cops say how he died?’
‘They said it was a stricture around his neck, you know the type the Frame gang use.’
‘The Frames? What again? Only last week we thought they were responsible for the Misery murders.’
Oh yeah old Mrs Misery and her two daughters, Mind and Loves. That was sad.’
‘It certainly was they still owed me a weeks rent.’
So you think the Frames eh. Glass or Perspex?
‘Probably both. They are each cold blooded and they love to use the tape. Bind your mouth, shut you up and do you in.’
‘That Perspex Frame is a tough nut. Glass on the other hand is a bit fragile. He might be the one to go after and see if we can shatter him so he will spill the beans.’
‘I think we’ll go tonight, raid their place and bring ‘em down. Are you in?’
‘The Radish will expect it wont he?’
‘We’ll dismantle those Frames with our own brand of stricture.’
