In 200 words or less, write a mystery-themed story that is solved over afternoon tea.
Where had Rosa Alflick gone? The mystery had gripped the village for the past week. Madge Witts had invited us to afternoon tea. We were gathered around her kitchen table each with a story to tell. ‘Rosa had been kidnapped, she’d run off with a sailor, she’d been murdered and her body buried in someone’s back garden.’
The stories were numerous and seemed to multiply as the days went by.
Madge was pouring the tea when Henry Caine said he knew where she was. He was about to go on when after a sip of his tea he doubled over onto the floor. We rushed to his side but it was too late. Henry was dead.
We all looked suspiciously at our tea as Madge went on serving fresh lamingtons she’d made earlier.
As one we put down our tea and lamington. We all looked at Madge who seemed non-plussed about all that was happening.
She saw us all looking at her.
She took her tea and sipped, bit into her lamington and said, “ Rosa and Henry were having an affair. They had it coming. If you’ll be patient I’ll pop him in the incinerator with Rosa.”
