When Herbie Richmond was arrested the newspapers wrote him up as a colourful character in the racing industry.
It was a flattering term when you considered he was a race fixer and illegal bookmaker.
He’d nobbled many a horse and ruined many a potential trainer by having his ‘business associates’ get to the jockey or slip something into the horses feed.
The community were as one keen to know what the law would do with a character such as Herbie Richmond and followed his case each day the court case was in session.
Herbie pleaded he was only a humble business man with a passion for horse racing, was it his fault if favourites didn’t win or jockeys fell off their mounts.
Sadly for Herbie his colourful lifestyle came to an end and he was sentenced to years in prison where he became a colourless character.
