OpenLinkNight #168 – The Old Rose

IMG_0167

There’s a flower in my garden

That reminds me of life’s beauty.

It’s a black rose

Unique, it’s rich colour fascinates me.

It’s in bloom today

And this year is forming so beautifully.

It’s an old rose

Rescued from my grandmothers

When the old house was sold.

My dad’s only requirement when I

Started on the garden

Was to not kill the rose.

So I prune it in July, I feed it, deadhead it

I make sure it’s as healthy as it can be.

Its aroma is of Turkish Delight

Its texture so velvet like.

So often now days

It reminds me of you.

Rich in character

So beautiful to behold.

I share its blooms with you.

You understand the beauty that is you and I

Reflected in the stunning richness

That is us.

Isn’t it amazing to see roses die by winter and by spring, it blooms so beautifully ~ Love that the old rose is still there, blooming with a rich color, and reflecting the goodness of both the giver and the beloved ~ Thanks for joining us for OLN Michael ~

  4. How wonderful to compare the beauty of an old, cherished rose bush to that of an aging loved one. Like the plant, love needs that constant care.

A poem for the senses, for sure. Wonderful descriptions of the texture, the smell, the beauty of the heirloom rose! I enjoyed this very much.

  7. I find it amazing how the best of roses can be kept and be the keeper of memories.. Sometimes when you visit an old abonded house you find an old rose being the only living thing that stays.

  8. Lyn's avatar Lyn says:

I love roses–especially red roses, which can have the most beautiful heady perfume. Sadly, my poor little rose has been brought close to death so many times. It has very little perfume and doesn’t look much as roses go, yet I keep pruning it and feeding it because my little grandson and granddaughter gave it to me for mother’s day a couple of years ago.

  9. Roses repay their care a thousandfold.

This poem written about your relationship with your special friend possesses the qualities of old roses: strength and elegance; grace; uniqueness; and the patina of gentle love.

  11. The sentiment is rich and the language makes the image visible. Nice metaphor for a relationship.

  12. A Rose Online..
    certainly a Love
    far beyond
    the first
    and last
