It had been about roads not taken
And stopping by woods on snowy evenings.
Now he had chosen the path
And there was only one way
Through the avenue of trees
That pressed in on him.
The voice in his head said ‘No going back.’
You need a fresh start
Time to step away from the torments of the past
Where people used you
Spat on you
Cursed you
Treated you worse than a dog
In places here no one saw
No one imagined the pain
The humiliation
The stripping of self
Until only a husk remained
Held intact by a desire to survive.
Holding his head high
He didn’t know where he was headed
But he knew from what he was going.

Beautiful Michael!!!
Thank you praj, I very much appreciate your comment.
Nothing quite like finding that road of escape, not exactly knowing where it leads, but knowing it’s the right one anyway. Very special poem, Michael.
Thank you Mandy knowing you made a decision and see the virtue in it no matter what makes all the difference
So true.
Indeed! Beautiful, powerful.
Thank you so much Dell.
Most welcome, Michael.
Nicely done.
Thank you so much.
Love the first two lines and the last two. Powerful, courageous, victorious… yay for starting anew.
Thank you Debi, yes it isn’t easy to break away but to stay is a slow death….thank you again for stopping by.
Many people never get the chance to go down the road not taken, to follow a path towards the light. Trapped, self gone, and don’t see how they can escape the abuse.
You wrote a great poem of someone made a decision to break free! If we could all make such decision . . .
Yes indeed, its very difficult when you see so many around you saying you are mad for taking that first step but you know it is the right thing for you to do. Thanks for that comment, much appreciated.
That is a powerful ending and a poem I can relate to and I am happy to say the path lead to a better place!
Thanks Yves, so often it does it just takes that initial courage to step towards a better life. I am happy for you that it did.
Excellent and visionary piece Michael 😀
The deafening roar of the madness that accompanies the initial hesitations can be too overwhelming – and the courage to silence those voices – to look ahead – even not knowing where one will end up – is fortitude in action.
Positive piece that is inspiring 😀
Thank you so much Mercy, as always I appreciate your insightful comments.
Fresh start, and he knows ‘where’…nice
Thank you Irene for stopping by, I appreciate your comment.
