You didn’t know did you?
Clueless.
It was common knowledge.
So much passed you by
As you buried your mind
In mindless drivel;
So we thought.
But you were astute
Perceptive
Far more than we gave you credit
Your mind on a different level
Your heart seeking the unknown,
Oblivious
To those who loved you
Cared for you.
For you were driven
Reckless in pursuit
Of mysterious voices
Truths yet to be told
But kept prisoner in your psyche,
Festering there
Looking and waiting a day of reckoning
When unleashed
A new dawn would arrive.
I knew you then
But to you I was a predator
Another monster to stay well clear of.
It took years, so many years
To see I was no villain.
Then a day where you saw no threat
When as a sign of acceptance,
You passed to me a page of your mind.

A demonic inference, perhaps I have my own interpretation though.
Maybe you’ve been around demons too much jen?
Possibly….
A bit haunting–losing one’s mind can be, and is never understood by “normal” people. Coming back from that can only be thrilling. Am I close? I’m reading a memoir by a New York Post reporter called “Brain On Fire.” She actually lost her mind for a month and was nearly put in an insane asylum until they discovered it was a rare disease where a person actually loses their mind–in olden days people with this were thought to be possessed by demons (as in The Exorcist). (Luckily with proper diagnosis it can be treated!.) I really enjoyed this!
As you know the damaged people of this world will often operate in a different space to the rest of us ‘normal’ ones. To break down those protective walls sometimes requires great patience and commitment. Trust is a such a powerful place to be in and a very lonely vulnerable one when you don’t have any in those around you.
I hardily concur, Michael.
Awww…if only the trust was there from the beginning. Not always easy when past experiences put us on guard.
This is by far, one of the the strongest, most poignant pieces I’ve read, of yours, to date. Michael, you capture essences deeply profound and yet so Truthful (yes, capital “T” as in Universal) is to weep.
Well done my friend, well done.
Thank you Mercy you are very kind and generous.
I loved the descriptive imagery you put into this poem and the conclusive line added that wonderful sense of fulfillment that is the reward for loving and earning someone’s trust. A very poignant write, Michael.
This is a brilliantly descriptive concept….passing on to someone a page of her mind. Clever and so provocative. Love it 🙂
