D’Verse –Meeting the Bar: Songwriting and its Relationship to Poetry – Almost Loveable

Almost Loveable

On our first date you said

I like you

On our second date you said,

I can see where you’re comin’ from

On our third date you said

Honey you make me laugh

On our fourth date you took my hand

Looked me in the eye and said

Baby I love the way you smile

I love the way you look at me

I love the chocolates, and the candy

The flowers and the valentine

I’m not trying to be mean

When I say to you,

Baby you’re almost loveable

In every little thing you do.

Almost loveable has got to be better

Than not loveable at all

Every woman up until you

Has run away from me.

They take one look,

Listen to me speak

Then high tail it out of here

So I guess almost loveable

Is better than not loveable at all.

I love song lyrics; with the right melody you can say almost anything and still make a million dollars. I just can’t find the right melody!! For me poetry has to stand alone, with songs as I said you can say anything and hide behind a great melody.

Oh – this felt heart crushing.

I comment on that lyrics/music sometimes & say – If I came up with that – it would be a flop. Some people are just at the right place – at the right time & know the right people.

  2. Aside from the heart crushing lyrics, I can hear the music of your heart.

hey maybe you will make your million man….smiles.
almost loveable has a bitter sweet taste, just a nip of a doubt
it is better than being not loveable, but i would wonder
why it was not fully…you know…ha

  4. But somehow, the beauty of such words makes it alright…

  5. Almost loveable is like settling. Yes they do write songs about anything. . . So do we writers. It’s personal taste. A pretty good almost love poem. 🙂

  6. Lyn's avatar Lyn says:

Not only can he write poetry, but he comes up with: For me poetry has to stand alone, with songs … you can say anything and hide behind a great melody.

  7. JackieP's avatar JackieP says:

Ah the almost lovable quandary. I’m sure it will pass and you’ll be totally lovable. Don’t we all want to be lovable. I loved this though. Women sometimes are in the same position, almost lovable. Sad really.

  8. Bodhirose's avatar Bodhirose says:

Almost loveable…what a thing to say to someone… Ok, I’m rooting for you to find that perfect melody and make your millions…you can do it!

    It is a lovely song

  10. Oh Michael..is almost loveable do-able? Take me completely for who and what I am…does the almost loveable leave open to I will change the part of you I don’t like…? Very interesting piece my friend. 🙂

  11. That was a sad, but lovely piece. I consider that if we changed to suit someone else, in time we probably wouldn’t be happy. It’s often not our fault if a relationship doesn’t work out. There are might be some things in the other person’s past we don’t know that keep them form emotionally connecting with us. I found in the past when I was still dating, that it was better to just part as friends, if possible, and move on.

    • Good comment patricia and thanks for saying that I think what you say is true, being yourself is all important. And parting friends is I think everyone’s aim in relationship should it end at any time.

  12. That was a sad, but lovely piece. I believe that if we change just to suit someone else, in time we might not be happy. Sometimes there could be something in a person’s past we know nothing about that prevents them from emotionally connecting with us. 13. yes you are right about the…anything goes if covered by some music…but then think of the lyrics of Joni Mitchell…Bob Dylan and up to date the words in Amy Winehouse’s music..it’s not always true.

    • Yes Geraldine I do agree I was making a very generalised comment there, there are some songwriters whose lyrics are far better than their music…..thanks for the comment, please call again..

so beautiful so beautiful dear Michael, Thank you, love, nia

  15. Michael… anyone being almost lovable… has to be almost good… and I love that you use baby… no hit have ever been written without that word.

  16. I think your lyrics seem light on the surface, but they hide that person with low self-esteem. We all know someone, who is happier with a crumb than he/she should be and doesn’t really find and appreciate themselves. Also this would make a good song – in several different modes – pop, country or folk. I could imagine it several different ways and tempos. Well done.

Please feel free to comment, I appreciate your thoughts.
