Thoughts on watching the film ‘The Book Thief’ by Marcus Zusak
I watch
Images
Flash before me
A past
Not so long ago.
Terror
Uniforms
Disorder
Destruction
Chaos
Pain
Tears.
Death feasting
On the lives of the innocent.
We must not forget
The human spirit
Is resolute
Determined against all odds.
It stands up, when knocked down
Resilience ingrained
No foe will ever
Overcome us.
Having read The Book Thief some years ago and being a great lover of the novel I was pleased yesterday to be able to view the film. As a result it has spawned several pieces of writing one of which I include in this weeks d’verse.

we can hope…though it seems at times we are always looking for new ways to destroy ourselves….even still we over come….
Thanks Brian so true man’s pursuit of newer ways to destroy himself.
Lovely, and deep. Now I am curious to read the novel.
Oh you will love it Oliana. Great story, I have had people of all ages read it and enjoy it. Good Australian author.
Ah, well, then, if it is an Australian author, I MUST and will discuss the book with my Aussie friends as well as you…I’ll let you know. Did you find the movie was a good interpretation of the novel?
I thought the movie was different in many ways but it captured the essence of the novel very well.
We must learn
still
we refuse
and repeat
over and over
inhumanities
So true Bjorn, thanks for reading my poem.
This is a movie I DO want to see. I do like the message that the human spirit is resolute!
Thank you Mary, one of human beings greatest gifts I think is our ability to overcome adversity. You will enjoy the movie.
Nice poem. I’m a fan of Markus Zusak, The Book Thief one of the best books ever. The movies is coming to Brazil in 10 days. I’m glad to hear it’s so good it inspired a poem. ❤
Hello Kenia, great to hear you are a fan of Marcus’ work, good Australian author. He has written a number books but the Book Thief is his best I think. You’ll enjoy the film. Thanks again for the comment. Please all by again.
This is full of power and a little overwhelming, nicely done and very vivid.
Thanks Alan, if you know the novel and now the film you would see why. Thanks again for the comment.
I read the book…I can’t wait to see the movie. It did get past me at the theater so a rental it is! 🙂 Thanks for the review~
No not quite a rental as yet…..borrowed from a ‘friend’….but you’ll enjoy it….
yeah I figured….I will wait *sigh*
I should get the movie, once it’s out – as my reading time has deserted me. Loved the death feasting line. Very strong Michael.
Thank you Jenny, Death has a voice in the story.
The one word lines work in this poem. Nice idea. Glad you pursued it.
Thank you Emmet so happy you enjoyed the poem.
Oh, I nearly bought the book today when I was in Dymocks. My ex-daughter in law gave me a Dymocks’ gift voucher for my birthday. I wish I had bought it now, but it will still be there next week when I get back from holidays. I want to see the movie too. From the previews I’ve seen, I think I’ll enjoy it. Geoffrey Rush is a great actor.
It’s a great read Lyn and the movie is good as well. Yes G Rush is excellent. yes grab one next week.
Yes, this is a universal story – my poem this week explores the experience from another angle.
Thanks Colin, I read your poem and see the pint you are making. Thanks so much for reading mine.
This movie is on my list of must-see films. Your poem makes me want to see it even more.
You will enjoy it Gabriella, excellent and engaging film.
Great book – haven’t seen the film yet, but you make me want to see it!
Very brave form for your poem – single words on each line is hard to pull off. I think you do, perhaps because the words are so striking and disturbing/destructive in themselves.
Thank you Marina, the story is all those words as well. Thanks again for your lovely comment.
Our minds and thoughts are always free. Even if we are beat into submission.
I read this book years ago and was blown away by it. I had forgotten that there was a film made… I feel apprehensive about watching it – I kind of don’t want it to spoil my internal mind’s eye film version! I really enjoyed your poetic response though!
Thank you Freya, i thought the same but you’ll find the film is ok. I enjoyed it.
Well, that’s a good start….!
you’ll enjoy it Freya
A good capture! Lovely.
Thank you so much Ayala I am very happy you enjoyed my poem. Please call again.
