OpenLinkNight ~ Week 129 – The Book Thief

Thoughts on watching the film ‘The Book Thief’  by Marcus Zusak

book-thief-sketch-2

I watch

Images

Flash before me

A past

Not so long ago.

Terror

Uniforms

Disorder

Destruction

Chaos

Pain

Tears.

Death feasting

On the lives of the innocent.

We must not forget

The human spirit

Is resolute

Determined against all odds.

It stands up, when knocked down

Resilience ingrained

No foe will ever

Overcome us.

Having read The Book Thief some years ago and being a great lover of the novel I was pleased yesterday to be able to view the film. As a result it has spawned several pieces of writing one of which I include in this weeks d’verse.

we can hope…though it seems at times we are always looking for new ways to destroy ourselves….even still we over come….

  2. Lovely, and deep. Now I am curious to read the novel.

  3. We must learn
    still
    we refuse
    and repeat
    over and over
    inhumanities

This is a movie I DO want to see. I do like the message that the human spirit is resolute!

Nice poem. I’m a fan of Markus Zusak, The Book Thief one of the best books ever. The movies is coming to Brazil in 10 days. I’m glad to hear it’s so good it inspired a poem. ❤

    • Hello Kenia, great to hear you are a fan of Marcus’ work, good Australian author. He has written a number books but the Book Thief is his best I think. You’ll enjoy the film. Thanks again for the comment. Please all by again.

This is full of power and a little overwhelming, nicely done and very vivid.

  7. I read the book…I can’t wait to see the movie. It did get past me at the theater so a rental it is! 🙂 Thanks for the review~

  8. I should get the movie, once it’s out – as my reading time has deserted me. Loved the death feasting line. Very strong Michael.

  9. The one word lines work in this poem. Nice idea. Glad you pursued it.

Oh, I nearly bought the book today when I was in Dymocks. My ex-daughter in law gave me a Dymocks’ gift voucher for my birthday. I wish I had bought it now, but it will still be there next week when I get back from holidays. I want to see the movie too. From the previews I’ve seen, I think I’ll enjoy it. Geoffrey Rush is a great actor.

Yes, this is a universal story – my poem this week explores the experience from another angle.

This movie is on my list of must-see films. Your poem makes me want to see it even more.

Great book – haven’t seen the film yet, but you make me want to see it!
Very brave form for your poem – single words on each line is hard to pull off. I think you do, perhaps because the words are so striking and disturbing/destructive in themselves.

  14. Our minds and thoughts are always free. Even if we are beat into submission.

  15. I read this book years ago and was blown away by it. I had forgotten that there was a film made… I feel apprehensive about watching it – I kind of don’t want it to spoil my internal mind’s eye film version! I really enjoyed your poetic response though!
