Making Sense of Nonsense – January 18th – Jammshup

series_Nonsense

Miss Marble looked at the note in front of her and was immediately concerned.

It had been a long time since she received a request for jammshup. She was concerned because she remembered well what jammshup was and it was not a potion to trifle with.

In Medieval times it was used as a truth serum. It was very effective as one drop on your tongue sent your mind into such a spin that you were more than willing to answer any question as truthfully as you could to spare yourself another drop of the potion.

But time and sensibilities had changed. The potion, which she always thought was barbaric, had been outlawed by the Assembly Of Covens and although the recipe still existed it was never used beyond the 1600s.

But the name on the order bothered her as well. Delorus Mountpony, Miss Marble thought was long dead. She had been a form of inquisitor back when inquisitors were a penny a dozen.

Below the name was a mobile telephone number and Miss Marble was surprised to hear Delorus’ voice when she rang the number.

Delorus it turned out was up to her old tricks, contracted by the Pony Road Gang, a hideous group of thugs from the other side of the tracks, she had need of the potion to help out an old friend, as she put it.

Miss Marble knew the dangers of the potion and refused to consider the order, especially for Delorus Mountpony, and told her so.

When Miss Marble refused you even Delorus knew better than to threaten or try to cajole you. Delorus and her friends would have to make use of more conventional methods to extract whatever truth they needed.

As for Miss Marble the thought of making the potion, of digging the worms she needed from her garden and boiling them in rats faeces was not a smell she wanted lingering in her kitchen. It was little wonder victims in the past had given up all and every secret, as she knew how horrible it was to smell let alone have to taste.

She shuddered as she screwed up Delorus’ note and cast it into the kitchen fire.

100 Word Wednesday: Week 54 – The Present Future

100ww_w54

When the future arrived we gathered in the city centre to plan the next fifty years.

The present future was looking bright for us. The seasons had been favourable to cropping and the babies were now growing stronger after years of uncertainty.

We decided the buildings in good order we’d use to create learning centres as the past held lots of lessons we could all benefit from.

There were fears the tower would fall soon if the tremors continued. We were urged to stay away from the tower.

We liked the notion of a future, it gave us all hope.

In Other Words, mindset…

in-other-words1

Mindset

It was clear from the outset that the mindset within he small community was intractable to say the least.

They lived in fear of the worms in their garden believing they were controlling their minds and that their doom was only a matter of days away.

They found a God to pray to, make sacrifices to and generally hope the worms would go away.

But the worms were a resilient lot, with a mindset of their own and stayed deep under the ground plotting and planning against the villagers.

The early morning rumbling from within the earth reinforced their mindset that the end was now imminent.

Photo Challenge #197 – Stuck!

misfit_n

Image: Braedin Toth

When Johnno set off on his first round the country journey he thought he had everything covered.

The old Kombi he had worked on and had it in tiptop shape.

So it came as a surprise to him when it broke down along the dam wall.

The engine had given up the ghost. There was nothing, no response when he turned the key. He knew he could fix whatever it might be but right now this wasn’t a stopping off point along his trip he had anticipated.

Above him the snow covered mountains told him of a cold night ahead.

He had packed the flares in case of an emergency like this and hopes never to use them.

Because the dam wall was down in a low part of the mountains he stood on the roof and let them off hoping against hope he might be rescued. As it was coming on to night he didn’t expect to be found and so began preparations for the night.

He had food and water, there were blankets in the kombi and he knew he might be cold but at the same time safe from the freezing temperatures.

Just as he was settling he heard the helicopter.

Twittering Tale #67 – 16 January 2018 – “The Tree”

pexels-photo-veeterzy

The tree is twisted and buckled like my family tree.
From convicts to doctors and lawyers.
You wonder the stories within it,
did they like coming to Australia, did the summer heat surprise them
was the temperate winter a reason for the long sea voyage?
So much to learn, no one to ask. (280 characters)

#JusJoJan Daily Prompt – January 16th, 2018 – contemplation

jjj-2018

Contemplation was something I knew I needed to do and was looking forward to the weekend away I had booked into promising me an insight into myself through deep personal contemplation.

I enthusiastically attended my first class and awaited a sense of enlightenment.

Our instructor arrived, a young lady, trim and slim all smiles and encouragement.

She asked us to sit on the floor and assume the position.

I was immediately flummoxed, as I didn’t know any position apart from the position of positivity about the benefits the weekend held for me.

Seeing my puzzled look she came to assist.

There followed a series of body movements that creaked, groaned and finally snapped as I found myself tied in a knot from which I feared I’d never recover.

Whilst every other participant appeared serene in the same position my body screamed at me to provide relief of any kind to it.

Finally I rolled over, legs still knotted, I feared for the duration of my life, which I felt was drawing to an end by the second.

Around me the serenity continued only interrupted by the groans of agony from me.

Seeing my discomfort the instructor stifling a giggle came to my rescue, untangled me and said I’d best take a walk in the garden to get the blood circulating once again.

The walk allowed my time to contemplate my future participation.

Wot I Shot Wednesday

IMG_0608

Recently I have been working on Family Tree and I took the above photo of my Grandfather grave stone. He died, in 1950, before I was born but he fought in WW1, was injured like so many, lost an eye and wore a glass eye. He came to Australia from Scotland in 1900, worked in saw mills before going to war. After the war he married my grandmother and for a time lived in the house I now live in. The Nancy mentioned on his gravestone is my mother.

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers – The Pot of Gold

photo-20180115154619421

The race was on. Over the road, across the field, jump the fence, trip, fall, get up, race on, the prize was for the taking.

It was so close and yet so far. The pot of gold awaited the fastest there.

Each contestant had in his mind what he’d do when he secured his prize.

One guy edged ahead then fell in the bog. Another took his place but tripped over his big feet. A third thinking he had it won made the mistake of looking behind and hit the wall.

The final contestants stood at the end of the rainbow and looked around. The pot had to be there. But where? They searched frantically, upturning everything in sight but there was no gold.

Just then the leprechaun stood up, the pot in his hand and announced they had to catch him first. He disappeared in a puff of smoke leaving them all clutching at air.

#JusJoJan Daily Prompt – January 15th, 2018 – Justice

jjj-2018

Justice was finally done. The sinning criminal bastard was dragged before the court and justice was met out to him.

The terror we had all found ourselves embraced within had come to an end. There was a collective sigh of relief within the community.

The ‘Bad Egg’ as we came to know him was about to be expunged from our lives and we couldn’t wait to see it happen.

Justice brought with it a macabre sense of righteousness as we assembled to watch him get his comeuppance.

Society had no place for a ‘Bad Egg’, we reacted quickly as we demanded justice for the injustice we observed.
