Prose ChallengeWrite a story in 75 words or less that is inspired by the photo prompt and one of the word prompts.

Epiphany

It was on the road to Morpeth my epiphany occurred. It was as if struck by the hand of God. I looked and saw how good I had it. Material wealth and possessions amounted to naught when I thought of what I did have. A house, family and more importantly some semblance of good health.

Added to that I had acquired a friend like no other.

It was time to stop and smell the roses.

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #Week 31

exploration-challenge-31

I found this an interesting concept to ponder over. “ I exist because I act to change the world in bits and instalments, I leave a part of myself in every bit that I touch”.

I don’t think consciously you go about with that in mind. It would be weird thinking this morning I am going to mow the lawn and that act will change the world in some way. It will keep the grass under control, it will make me feel better now my yard is tidy, and the clippings will fertilise the earth.

I think it is best to look in hindsight and see where this applies.

As a teacher, I did stand in front of a lot of kids during my 39 years as a teacher. Some I remember fondly some I struggle to recall their names let alone their faces. I’m sure I was more than forgettable to many as well. Let’s face we cannot ever satisfy or please everyone.

It’s in the years after a student went through that you might hear from them. One fellow we engaged in performance went on to make a career for himself in music theatre. He performed in some of the best-known shows all round the country. Some years ago he did a one-man show, and during a performance in our local area he paused to tell his audience he was grateful for the opportunity I gave him while a student to get started in performance.

I guess you could say I left a positive mark on him.

I don’t think at any time I thought of myself as changing the world. Rather I saw my role in education as giving my students opportunities to explore themselves and whatever topic we might be studying. In the end, I hoped they left school with positive memories of their school years. I developed this attitude after working in a country school where so many kids came from families where education had not been a positive experience. I did my bit to change that attitude.

Time To Write: Sentence Starter 33 [Creative Writing Prompt]

ttw-ss-33

“You’re late,” the teacher announced standing at the classroom door, her beady eyes made, even more, intimidating by the horn-rimmed glasses she had perched on the end of her nose.

“Well Miss, “ I began, “I was just about to leave home when I noticed one of my chickens was out of its pen and if I didn’t get it back into its pen the dingoes would most likely come by and kill it.”

“Dingoes? We don’t have dingoes around here, what a load of nonsense you are spouting, Master Cook, you always have the most ludicrous excuses for being late to class. Now get to your seat and have your Maths book ready for me to check your homework.”

“But its true Miss, Ernie and Ralph Dingo are always coming round our place and pinching stuff.”

“Bert Cook! I won’t tell you again to get to your seat. Now show me your maths homework.”

“Sorry Miss but I haven’t done it.”

“Well, that’s detention for you. You’ll stay in at lunch and get it done.”

“But Miss it wasn’t my fault. My dad came home from work and needed a hand to get his motorbike fixed. We were up on the roof half the night fixing it.”

“Up on the roof? What were you doing up on the roof?”

“I told you, Miss, fixing dad’s motor bike.”

“Do you expect me to believe you and your father were fixing his motor bike up on the roof?”

“Yes Miss he does all his fixing up there ‘cause that’s where he keeps his tools.”

“Up on the roof?”

“Yes.”

“Bert, you are an imbecile if you expect me to accept that as an excuse for not doing your maths homework.”

“Its true Miss, he even wrote you a note to explain.”

“Let me see that note. ‘Dear Miss please excuse Bert from his homework last night as he was helping me fix my motor bike which I need to get to work in order to earn enough to clothe and feed my children, with Bert being one of the eight I have to provide for. Yours faithfully, Dick Cook, (Father).’ Well, I see.

The teacher looked suspiciously at her pupil and then moved to her seat in the front of the room before announcing they were moving onto a geography lesson.

“Today we are going to look at the cities of Australia. Now, who can tell me where I might find the Sydney Harbour Bridge?”

“Sydney Harbour?” called a dim-witted boy in the front seat.

“Melbourne?” another hopeful suggested.

“I know I know, “ called Bert, “He lives in Cap Street, you know him, Miss, Mr Bridge does all the sewer repairs. My dad once said Mr Bridge could tell where anything he found in the sewers came from. I bet Miss he tell your poo from anyone else’s.”

“Stop that Bert Cook, I’ve had about enough of your stories for one day. One more peep out of you and its detention for a month. Now…oh thank goodness that’s the recess bell. Class dismissed.”

April 5: Flash Fiction – The Silly Sun

working-template-for-ff-challenges

April 5, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a silly sun story. Up north, “sun silly” is the energetic and playful response to returning sunlight. It could also be an April Fool’s jest, a silly story, or a reaction to spring fever. Be silly and write playfully! Go where the prompt leads.

It was such a silly event. We all laughed, oh how we laughed. Winter had arrived with its long dark days. But we awoke to a sunny morning and it was simply ridiculous because we realised it was the sun playing its silly tricks once again.

Sure enough within a half hour of being fooled into thinking it was a sunny day it disappeared behind dark wet clouds and the cold descended, as it is want to.

We giggled to one another as we packed away our shorts and t-shirts, thinking that silly old sun was giggling with us.

TELL ME A TALE IN 120 WORDS

tmat120

Today’s prompt is:  What are your top two “pet peeves?”

I find ignorance a pet peeve. People holding views on subjects so rigidly any attempt to argue logically with them simply falls on deaf ears. They just don’t hear you, and they don’t hear you for fear of having to admit they might be misguided.

Another is punctuality. I once lived with a woman who thought a six o’clock start meant that’s when you left home whether or not it was one mile or a hundred to get to where we wanted to go. It was infuriating, as she just didn’t get it. So I started telling her we had to leave at 5.30 in the hope she would be ready and save us the embarrassment of continuously being late.

Making Sense of Nonsense – Adder’s Milk

1*5F6HFOgwIkjA5sRBkc_VvQ.png

Joey Turpentine followed the circus, as there he knew he had a captive audience. The circus owner never minded the strange little man with a big voice being on the circus grounds as he only added to the crowds who gathered to watch the various acts the circus offered.

Joey came with his own ‘troupe’, and once the circus was set up, they would move in, set up their tent while another group would go through the town handing out leaflets announcing his one night only presentation of Adder’s Milk the new wonder drug.

Adder’s Milk the leaflet explained was a drug used by the Hieawaffwaff people in the Amazon jungle. This tribe, explorers had discovered were literally illness free, and their good health was all down to their taking Adder’s Milk each day.

Researchers had since listed the uses of Adder’s Milk and everything from the common cold to cancer had been cured by it.

It was little wonder that by the time the circus gates were open a huge crowd had gathered in front of Joey’s tent, and his assistants were ushering people in. It was standing room only when Joey entered, a bottle of Adder’s Milk in his hand and began his spiel espousing the benefits of his wonderful product.

At one point, his presentation was interrupted by a man claiming he was talking a whole lot of BS. Joey not to be deterred invited the man to the front and asked him if he had any ailment. The man announced he had a withered arm and displayed an arm visibly withered.

Joey opened a bottle of Adders Milk and asked the man to take some he had measured out into a cup. The man did so motioning to the crowd that this act would prove the hoax once and for all.

He drank the liquid and stood triumphant in front of the audience before collapsing onto the floor where he writhed in pain. Joey’s helpers rushed to the man’s aid and lifted to a side table before announcing they had called for help.

By now the audience was growing more and more hysterical and began calling for Joey to be thrown out.

Just as the audience was getting to the uncontrollable stage, there was a movement from the side of the stage. The afflicted man was moving, then standing, then looking at his withered arm, then raising his now cured arm, showing it to the crowd who by now were gasping in amazement as the man went from person to person showing them his now normal arm.

The man turned to Joey and immediately asked to buy ten bottles of the wonder drug.

Within seconds the angry crowd had turned to frantic buyers of the Adder’s Milk.

Within minutes Joey’s entire supply was sold with the unfortunate ones being forced to make orders having been told their orders would be honoured within a week.

By night’s end, the circus had enjoyed a record attendance, and the community had returned to their homes satisfied they had received a great nights entertainment plus a bottle or two of Adder’s Milk to keep them hale and hearty.

The next morning the circus was its usual sleepy self, but Joey’s tent and signage had all disappeared. He was in fact on his way to the next town some fifty miles away where he would buy more sugar and bottles, print off the required labels and await the arrival of the circus caravan.

FLASH FICTION FOR THE PURPOSEFUL PRACTITIONER- 2018 WEEK #14 – The Morgue Kite Festival

kite

Image: MorgueFile 2a4054c7afcb25f354a6cf9709d9b8a5

My wife and I had extended our holiday in Morgue by an extra week as we found the community very relaxing and welcoming.

At breakfast one morning there had appeared a brochure announcing the annual Morgue Kite Festival.

So we turned up at the local showground where pretty much every local was there putting finishing touches to their respective kites. There were stalls selling everything you could imagine including DIY kite kits. We purchased a kit, as it would fit easily in our luggage for the trip home.

A whistle blew, and the sky was filled with kites of every colour and hue. It was the most spectacular exhibition I’d seen.

I asked a local if there was a prize for the winning kite. “Oh eye,” he replied pulling on the cord controlling his magnificent red kite.

Another whistle blew, and every kite and controller began a series of complicated and meticulous dives and loops.

With every successful loop, there was a collective “Oh eye.” from the massed kiters.

We retired that night convinced the town of Morgue, and its inhabitants were possessed with a rare magic, and we looked forward to the next day.

100 Word Wednesday: Week 65 – Growing Older.

img_5590

Image: Photo by Bikurgurl

It was a fact the older he grew, the more isolated he became.

He had never been a beauty and old age did nothing for his looks and certainly was a contributing factor in his inability to feel confident in approaching women.

He viewed life as if through a hole in the fence. Safe on one side he could spy on life as it passed him by.

From his vantage point, he felt shielded from the ups and downs of life.

Today he nestled on his side, his love on her side, the gulf between them seemingly impossible.

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers – The Missed Ferry

photo-20180402153604882

Image: © Dorathy

She was so pissed off at missing the ferry she sat glumly on the bench watching the happy travellers making their way to the resort across the water.

Her companion Russell didn’t know what to say to console her, so he sat pretending to share her disappointment. Truth be known had a bad feeling about the day and had delayed their arrival such that the gangplank had been taken in leaving them stranded and his girl friend fuming.

As they sat and watched the merriment departing, the ferry began to list, and they watched in horror as the ferry turned on its side throwing the passengers into the water.

The mayhem that followed left them reeling, and Russell felt the sense of foreboding settle over him.

They raced to the wharf to help. People were clambering to get out of the water, and in the distance, sirens could be heard.

Later they sat on the bench, and Russell heard her say she was glad they weren’t on board.

Inside Russell breathed a sigh of relief.

Photo Challenge #208 – Like Father Like Son

As a mother, she worried about her son

He had inherited his father’s worst traits

His repulsive nature

His perverse view of the world

His determination to bring everyone

To his disgusting level.

She tried to guide him

Show him there was more than domination

More to life than pig ignorance.

His father dismissed the mother

Urged his son not to be weak

To stand up against all odds

Demand his due, take what was his.

The son rose like his father

Leaving in his wake the shattered ambitions

Of those stupid enough to challenge him.

The mother saw her son’s demise

Coming from a long way off

Ever approaching, inevitable.

She picked her son up from the tatters

Of a life with no regard to consequences.

She found a spot for him

Next to his father, who suffering the same fate

Found peace away from the mire he so long wallowed in.
