Today’s lyrical prompt is:
“You gotta get up off that grey line…I’ll guarantee they’ll fall in line…“
The old man prides himself on acquiring wisdom.
He smiles at those who gather at his feet
Each one seeking answers to life’s puzzle.
He understands the struggles they face:
Each one is subject to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or as he puts it to himself, “Just bad luck!”
You can’t teach people not to be stupid he well knows
For everyone, there must be time to experience
To explore, to learn, to stumble and fall.
With experience comes knowledge he tells them
When you are lying face down
With no idea, as to how you might stand again
Ask yourself, “how did I get here?”
Either side of the grey line there is light
So, there’s always choice as to which side you take
There isn’t a wrong way, but more
A way that is right for you.

Those first two lines sound a lot like Jewish wisdom. First of all, the study of Torah and Talmud is not only considered a form of worship but of course, a path to wisdom. Also, every teacher believes he learns something unique from each student, so wisdom isn’t just what a teacher imparts, but what he receives.
Well I was thinking more the Dali Lama as he smiles a lot and I think its because he’s figured life out we haven’t….and yes as a teacher I know my students taught me a lot….I used to tell them I know somethings but I don’t know everything…
“Either side of the grey line there is light”…wow! That is so true and I never thought of it like that. Great piece Michael!
Thank you 😊
