After all those years he stepped away.

It wasn’t easy. He thought he’d explained the notion of their use by date being well past. But she was relentless. Tried every trick in the book to discredit him, spread rumours to make him feel guilty. Then simply used her own brand of violence to intimidate him further. It worked.

But he was determined not to buckle.

There was no going back.

He confided in a work colleague. Spat out his worries and the events of the previous day.

She asked him if it was worth it.

He said “Freedom is priceless.”

She sounds like a nasty piece of work – good thing he found the strength to walk away.

Freedom from an overbearing lover. Those types of relationships are like being imprisoned. Good that he was able to break away. By the way, I like how you used “use by date.” Perfect for this story!
