For today’s prompt, write an ekphrastic poem. An ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired by art.
A sheet of board spread on my dining room table
Marks the start of another project.
I watch with eyes wide open
As the lines and shapes mesmerise me.
Not a ruler, set square, compass needed
Everything I see is free hand.
The background blue sets the known tone
Lines are drawn intersecting, dissecting
Some seeming to sect all on their own.
It’s the geometry of painting I observe
This fascination with shape and contour,
Which as you progress take me into the world
Of the blue and white, the intimacy of pattern.
Over days there appears a wonder before my eyes
As shapes become form
I watch in wonder as it transforms.
Those telling words front and centre
Totally Fine as if a beacon
Reassuring me of your intent
Your amazing skill and talent.
I am as always, my boy, in awe.

Holy smokes!?! Free hand??? Seriously???
Excuse me while I fall over, slightly dizzy from the intimacy of the pattern – which by the way – is a totally brilliant line – but your son did this free-hand?
OMG – this is borderline genius/madness!
And this is such an awesome piece/write Michael. You’ve really captured the sense of the “emptiness of a blank canvas” so to speak, and walked us through the unfolding of the process …. ending with the wonder and awe that is the product of creation. Great compliment to your talented and gifted artist son. Wow!
I’m gob-smacked!
Actually Pat if you look on his website all the pieces you see are done the same way…its remarkable watching him work……though he does go a little stir crazy after a while…..at present he is doing a mural on the roof of a building in Newcastle……his murals are stunning I think. I worked on one with him once…..
I was indeed checking out his website – have bookmarked it to keep visiting it – because honestly, it’s pretty intense – and honestly, I am so blown away. I studied fine arts and printmaking etc. and know just how much time, effort etc. is behind these gorgeous creations – and so I’m like “holy cow!” ….. And yes, on the scale of mural??? Unbelievable. Truly.
Thank you Pat I’m keen to see his recent mural he has been working on the past few days on the roof of a building.
Stunning design, Michael! I might, might be able to draw one wiggly circle. Your son is very talented. I can see while you’re so proud of him.
Thank you Lyn, he is indeed a very clever man…
Lucas’ work is amazing — you have done an excellent job describing the process of his art. I am always amazed at the pieces you share. Best of luck to him with his projects — the roof project sounds magical.
Thank you…if it stops raining he may get the roof finished but it is looking spectacular I have to say….
