This week’s prompt: write about someone you’ve lost.
I knew him not so long ago.
He was firmly in my grasp
He was comfortable and able
Healthy never wealthy
With wisdom he was hoping to acquire.
But now it’s lost
They say he’ll never get it back
But he knows its still there
Just teasingly close
Wanting to show off
But on the outside it’s another story
Aging is happening and he can’t stop it.
He can’t run for buses anymore
He doesn’t think so straight
And most of his bits and pieces
Don’t function like they once did.
He finds that so irritating.
But there are pills and potions
To help with all that.
His mind struggles day in and day out.
His eyes watch him shave the face
Of an unknown man
He turns and notices his spreading girth
The strange clothes he now wears
Puzzles him.
A voice inside reminds him that
He has lost his youth.
How? He asks himself.
He wonders if it’s enough
To know it’s still thriving
Somewhere in his mind.

Great poeming, Michael.. I ask myself the same things every time I look in the mirror (although for different reasons now than in the past–now about where my youth has gone, before about who am I–long story).. enjoyed this!
“Still thriving in the mind”–is very life affirming, and it happens to be my daily experience.
I am glad to hear that Dell…..most of my life happens in my head….
Ain’t it great! I’m being sincere–I don’t think I’d trade this gift that is such a blessing.
Oh most definitely…
“He wonders if it’s enough To know it’s still thriving…” I happen to think so, Michael–though most of us have to go through that struggling wonder before we realize it. Make peace with the aging external (stay away from mirrors and reflective glass, let your barber give you your shave if you must.) It’s amazing how thinking young can revive those bits and pieces. 🙂
Yes it is wondrous isn’t it…..thanks Mandy for stopping by.
I can only hope to live a long life. But – one never knows.
Although in my 40s I can relate to some of this. And – now with a child that has become an adult – really? I have an adult for a child?
Scary thought isn’t it. My eldest turned 39 the other day….
Your eldest is younger than me! 😀
Well I guess someone has to be…lol….you are looking good for an ‘older woman’….lol
HA – Thanks!
{Hugs}
Well I’d hate to think you got to the biggest hat before me…..lol
((HuGS for U 2))))))
What scares me about mirrors is now it’s my mother looking back at me. To think, I used to look 10 years younger than my age. Ten years older?
Enjoyed as I can very much relate (except for shaving my face, 😉 )
Well the shaving bit is a relief…..lol…….yes I can relate to that image we see in the mirror…..
Thought I should point that out. 😉
