Prompt 2 – Through Thick and Thin

Today’s prompt: Who /what has been by you “through thick and thin”?

I see the six of you line up

It’s going to be a meeting like no other

I announce my plan

My marriage of twenty-three years is to end

I want them to be the first to know.

About time says one

Its ok dad we know you have to do this

Where will you go?

Are you ok?

Tears flow but I know many

Are tears of relief.

Some fifteen years later all six line up again

Its Christmas and we are together

Through all these years

Through the thick and thin

We have stayed loyal to each other

Supporting each other

Encouraging when one seemed lost

Knowing we are but a phone call away.

In times of great distress I called on you

You never denied me, never stepped back

You have each stood beside me

In moments where I wasn’t sure

If I was doing good or not.

But I knew you were behind me

Urging me on, valuing all I did,

And I have hung in there with you

Picking up pieces from time to time

Holding you as you cried

Trying to understanding the impossible

But never deserted you, never said no.

Well a few maybes but never rejection.

My children are amazing people

Each is an outstanding person.

How proud I am of them

For despite their dysfunctional upbringing

Somewhere along the line

I did right by them.

Yes through thick and thin

We are standing tall.

“My children are amazing people.” I’d say you did right by them, Michael. Lovely image: “We are standing tall.”

Getting ready to cry my eyes out. Everybody longs for, needs this–and not many have it. I call it my “hungry heart” syndrome…

  5. I’m glad you have been blessed. Being blessed is also your support system whether it’s a friend or family member.
I only have acquaintances in the state I live, for now. Out of my four best friends back home, since I was a kid, I have one that I seem to be on the same wave length with. The others are busy, but we still talk. The one though calls me a couple times a week and we talk till the phone goes dead, like last night. Acquaintances are not the same as a life long friend. (support system.)
    You are so fortunate.

I hope you’ve share this with your children – there won’t be a dry eye in the house!

  7. This is a blessing and a great accomplishment.

You reap what you sow, Michael, and you and your children are fortunate having each other. Through tough times, our children learn resilience and for whatever weaknesses were in their past they can turn into strengths. Bless you for being you, Michael. I have no doubt you have given much to your students as well.

You are a blessed man in many ways – as are your children. The relationship is one of mutual exchanges – on equal, respectful ground – and that is indeed – precious beyond any value or worth 😀

A lovely poem and tribute to them – and it speaks volumes about you – since you chose them as your subjects Michael 😀
