Poetry Prompt 6 – An Unlikely Thank You

thank-you1

I suspect this will be a surprise

I have thought long and hard

I find it difficult to articulate

Even with the passing of time.

There was a time you would laughed

Ridiculed what I am about to say.

But we are older, moved on in time

The traumas of our own immaturity

Lessened by time, memory, age.

I have come to tell you something

I felt I would never hear myself say.

Thank you for my children

Thank you for bringing them into the world

Thank you for the help you did give, in bringing them up

They have turned out wonderful people

Each an amazing person

Despite all we did

Despite our disfunctionality.

This has a sense of closure to it… Closure and moving on. Which is amazing! Beautifully put.

  2. This is closure, how we do change as we age, and some things that seemed important and no longer. Well done.

Wow – of all the people I thought you might have thanked, this was not on the list. I have huge respect for you, for this x

    • Thanks Pooky. I did try back in 2012 to write something similar but nothing came. Even now the wounds are still to a degree raw. Hence the brevity of this piece. But thanks for the opportunity.

I’m not sure those are the kind of wounds that can ever heal neatly and leave an almost invisible scar… But it sounds like you’re moving forwards and it’s good that when you look back you feel more than regret…

      • I agree, the scars remain but life goes on otherwise I wallow in what once happened and that is not going to happen as good things are about to happen.

      • PookyH's avatar PookyH says:

I agree completely. We are shaped by our past and even the most negative events of our past can contribute to the positive futures we’re yet to embrace. I’m glad that good things are headed your way x

It needed to be done, I think, that’s what I get out of it, now it’s done, now you can move on. Greatly done Michael.

    A heartfelt thank you.
And – no doubt that your children are so worth that & much more.
