D’verse – Open Link Night ~ Week 131- Loss

lovers-hands

The sea was wild,

I stood on the sand

The wake swirling at my feet

Watching and waiting

Where were you?

Why would you do this?

To me?

Do I wait an eternity?

When do I give up?

When should I go home?

It was first light

I saw you were gone

A silly silly argument

Over manners of all things

You insisted, I resisted,

You stormed off

Slammed doors

I felt wretched

Sleep evading me

Tossing and turning

I didn’t hear you go.

Your towel crumpled on the sand

Your favourite shirt

Inside the house key.

Friends came rushing

Questions

Humiliation

I admitted guilt.

Search began

Police, lifesavers,

Helicopter hovering overhead,

Surfboat out

Nothing

Despair.

All day I stood there

Hope fading with each passing second.

It is near dusk,

The searchers are stopping

Light fading,

Tomorrow they say, first thing,

Friends move off,

Families to care for

I am left at the waters edge

Looking, waiting, desolate,

Beyond caring, resolving

To wait out the night

I sit in the sand

My head bowed.

It is near midnight

The tide is in, my clothes are wet

I sit up, remembering

Looking about.

Darkness is intense,

I’m staring into a black hole.

I sense movement,

Your hand slips into mine,

You grip my fingers

Lock your hand into mine,

I see your face, illuminated

Reflecting the overhead moon

I bend to kiss you……….

My breath in one great gasp

Is sucked in, held,

I am awake

The pain………

  1. A beautifully sad story.

  2. The pain of loss radiates through this. How sometimes we place ourselves into situations that we will always regret afterwards. A sad write my friend, but very nicely penned.

  5. Well-chosen title. I like how you use alliteration without it being overbearing.

Michael, this made me want to cry! What anguish, guilt, despair, love, regret, hope and the grief stretching into unending pain-is woven into this tapestry !Bravo!

  12. RoSy's avatar RoSy says:

So much emotion & sadness. The hope of waiting that someone will return can last forever – even when our brain tells us that it will never or can’t ever happen – our heart & faith somehow holds on to some kind of hope.
