Today I received my first pair of boots.
The first I have ever owned. Prior to today boots were hand me downs or ones scavenged from the dump.
Shoes are a luxury, but a necessity. They have saved me from untold injuries at the dump.
But today I have new ones.
Given to me by the missionaries.
They have said I can wear them to school.
School, I have heard of such a place.
Learning they said will give you choices.
School will show you the world.
My shoes, so strong and sturdy, will take me places, out of here.

knowledge travels with us ~ boots take us there ~ nice feel to this one mate
Thank you Jenny very kind of you.
you are welcome
Very nice piece, a great metaphor for travel and growth! 🙂 🙂
Thanks Helen I am glad you saw that.
Very nice…like the tone. I’ve actually seen this happen in Africa, so it’s a very true sounding story to me.
Thanks Georgia, one would like to think with a happy ending.
Sometimes it has been actually…sometimes not. it depends on the missionaries more than on the students believe it or not.
Oh exactly, the quality of the teacher makes all the difference.
Yep…
i like the tone and the hope that comes with the new pair of boots 🙂
Thanks kz for your comment.
A fantastic story, Tommy. You can see the excitement of him as he puts the boots on (then runs down the road, trips on his laces, falls and breaks his neck 😉 )
That’s a bit grim Al. One would hope he learns quickly to lift his feet.
I fail to see the humour.
hahaha You had to go there Al
This a powerful story Michael really got to me emotionally
Thank you Yves, sometimes they come out that way. I think I had a point to make.
Nice take on the prompt. 🙂 Hopefully he can go to school and maybe help others in his situation.
Thanks Anja, one would hope so, that would be a very positive outcome.
I liked the voice in this, so full of hope and resilience.
Thanks Sandra, life is all about hope.
The voice here is very nice.. full of hope and setting the priorities right. Sometimes a pair of shoes is all it takes.
Thanks Bjorn, one would hope it is the start of a new start.
The things that we take for granted…
Love the feeling of hope in this story.
Thanks RoSy sometimes hope is all there is.
One of these days these boots are gonna…. walk right out of here!! *sings*
Great tale. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Miss Lou, that’s a great comment I never thought of applying that song to it, but well done.
I think the song has more to do with personal abuses of another person in a relationship type of situation though those actual lyrics could be applied to just about any boot genre.. lol
Certainly in this story the boots could take him well away from his present circumstances.
Great story about compassion, hope, learning and thus a road to better life-beautifully done:-)
Thank you Atreyee, I would hope such things did happen.
I hope so too Michael:-)
These boots are made for walking success! I really like this take. Not everyone is so fortunate to have shoes.
So right Amy, thanks for reading.
Dear Summerstommy,
Some of us take education for granted while others are deprived of it. Shame on us. I like the tone of your story and the voice. Those new boots are harbingers of a new life for him. Good job.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Lovely – and there are still thousands of people waiting for the chance to walk out of there.

I like this one.
Thank you Dawn, appreciate your comment.
Oh my this is so touching. Not just in third world countries either. These Friday fictions are really good!!
Thanks Cher, to comment I have to go back and find them to remember what I wrote.
haha, I love when that happens on my other blog…it means we write A LOT!!
It seems so. Are you going away for your holiday?
No…just resting.
Good I hope you get plenty you are deserving.
Yep, thanks. I am on slow motion…Monday I accepted 3 more telephone interviews for that student project but it’s a good cause. I have many long weekends books throughout March as well…it’s a taxing time of year (no pun intended for income tax time…lol)
Is that a holiday? Working? But you are passionate about what you do.
I am and it’s just for the morning.
You got to do what you have to do. Enjoy the break.
