Here’s my latest entry into the dVerse Form for All!
Today, our only limit is the number of words – 55 in total.
Put words down
Though they must make sense
The limit is the thing
Don’t go over
Thunder and lightning
The heavens will erupt
Universal harmony shall be destroyed.
A simple tale
From a simple man
About a simple day
Down under the earth
Where the sun shines
Birds sing
And happiness pervades,
Perfection and simplicity.
I enjoy the discipline of the 55, Michael. And I am glad to read that happiness pervades down under.
All day everyday Gabriella, there are worse places to be.
hey its a wonderful thing when it is a good day…when happiness pervades…
the limit is not easy and it does take some work to really tell a story in 55 words
i think it is a good exercise in conciseness…and i use it with my poetry club at school to help them see that too…
Thanks Brian, I have used the 100 word limit in teachng writing and that’s a harder task than kids realise. I think the 55 word poem is a great task for kids, might try it out on mine.
Sometimes it is the simple tales that are the best tales! And the simple men who have the most to offer.
Thank you Mary, I am a simple man, I think…..not sure about what i have to offer though.
Simplicity is actually quite profound… it is just without an ego 🙂
Thanks Margaret, that’s a lovely comment. I appreciate you reading my poem.
G’day, brother, as you swelter in the summer heat of holiday shadows; down under is the mirror image of this other hemisphere; so much said in 55, thanks.
Thanks Glenn, thankfully not everyday is a sweltering day, mostly it is perfect.
I love these simple tales in 55 words. It’s fun seeing everyone’s unique vison.
Thanks Nara, It’s fun writing for this one.
Living and writing within certain limits can be quite complex, fortunately for us this limit helps us learn to be sparse, simple in our storytelling…helps us see the beautiful simplicity of sunshine and birdsong and how the right kind of simplicity can be simply perfect.
Thank you Ronald, you are right it does take an effort to convey meaning in so few words. But it’s a lot of fun doing so.
What a lovely simplicity – really like the flow here …
Thanks Bjorn, Thanks for the comment.
I think this has a nice flow to it…enjoyed it…and feel attracted to this prompt…thanks!
Thanks Georgia, I had fun writing that one.
It was a fun read. 🙂
I went to a poetry workshop last month and the instructor said: ‘Invention comes out of problem-solving’ – so a word limit is a useful problem to sharpen our skills and wits! I like how you’ve worked around the problem…
Thank you Marina, the word issue is a fun one to play with. Conciseness works for me.
A simple tale
From a simple man
About a simple day… smiles…you know.. those are the best stories for me…
Thanks Claudia, you got the simple man bit right. The KISS method applies even to writing. Please call again.
You did it & did it well!
Happy Friday Michael 🙂
Thank you RoSy, that’s a lovely comment.
Very nice! Economy of words through the word count discipline but still somehow giving a sense of creative freedom in your choice of theme – very well balanced!! 🙂 🙂
and the sun sparkled on this little gem 🙂
Thank you Jenny.
Oh the horror of breaching 55! A fun write and read!
Thanks Freya, one would hate to go over the prescribed number.
😉
Neat! I always find self-referential poems irresistible, and I just adore the self-conscious humor in this one! Over 55 – the horror!
Thank you Samuel in some ways the 55 word limit is refreshing and at the same time scary, in trying to say something worthwhile in so few words. Thanks for the comment.
You’re welcome, a pleasure to visit your online journal
You are surely not from Morpeth. I passed the sign to Morpeth and Clarence Town yesterday on the way to the Liverpool Plains. Cannot tell you how many times I have passed that sign and never taken the time to turn off and have a look see. This time I will on my way back to Sydney. Life is very strange. Imagine meeting someone on dverse from these environs. Almost impossible They call this the six degrees of separation methinks:)
Yes I live on morpeth road
Coincidence eh
