Friday Fictioneers – Comfort

church_and_tree-claire-fullerCopyright Claire Fuller

Here is this week’s entry into the weekly challenge brought to us by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Here are the rules: Use the photo as inspiration, write a hundred(ish) words – and share!

The boy from the church was sitting under the tree sobbing his heart out.

His girlfriend had betrayed him, stating her marriage preference for the spotty youth.

His public humiliation apparent to all.

His head buried in his arms, his grief overflowing, any words I uttered were useless.

A girl who was waiting outside the church approached him.

She looked at him curiously, then bent to look into his eyes.

Saying nothing she embraced him.

His head sunk into her shoulder.

Comfort had arrived.

My job done, I returned to sit again on his shoulder.

Well now I need to know MORE. Wonderfully written but my only complaint is it had to stop.

  2. then I think you carry the story on and finish it, so we all know the ending 🙂

  3. I’m glad he found comfort. This story has a very soft, sweet feel to it.

    Dear Summerstommy,

A guardian angel on his shoulder? I like the rhythm you established and maintained. Good story.

    Aloha,

    Doug

Thanks Doug, I value your comments.

  6. Comfort – isn’t that all we need, sometimes? Lovely, and mysterious as well….

    • Michael's avatar summerstommy2 says:

Thanks Freya lovely comment as always. yes it is amazing how ‘comfort’ can be what we need, most of the time I think.

  8. Hannah's avatar Wanderer says:

I THINK the watcher/narrator is his guardian angel—sad that it couldn’t provide tangible comfort, but I’m glad the boy found a friend! A very sweet story.

    • Michael's avatar summerstommy2 says:

Thank you Wanderer I was playing with the idea that the girl is a manifestation of the angel. 100 words limits how far you can go. Thanks for reading my piece.

A guardian angel rather than the devil on his shoulder I presume. Nice idea.

  14. Good to read a story that ends happily amid all these dark tales. I think his guardian is going to watch over him carefully. Ron

  15. This is really quite lovely. I like how she looks in his eyes, says nothing, and then sinks into her shoulder. It has a nice rhythm to it I could feel.

  16. Dear Summerstommy,

It sounds like he’s found a true friend. Nice one.

    shalom,

    Rochelle
