Turmoil, terror, turbulent
I know you are standing at this point
Looking down
Trembling, torn and terrified.
Below is a abyss
One neither of us wants you
In any way to embrace;
For the way back is far more arduous
Than the path to prevent that fatal step.
I watch as you creep ever closer
The voices urging you on.
But the voice behind you
That says: ‘Love, we can work this out.’
Stops you short.
My hand slips into yours
Your fingers entwine
Your grip on me tight.
At my beckoning
You take a small step back.

I live with suicide ideation a great deal of the time. Sometimes that voice is quite seductive. Anyone who has someone to pull them back is fortunate.

Thank you for your comment I do so understand that ideation and if everyone had a ‘someone’ the toll would not be so great. In Australia more people die from suicide than from road deaths…
It’s a beautiful poem, quite powerful
Thank you so much.
I echo the other comments–beautiful and powerful, heart-moving; and the suicide voice is indeed seductive.
Thank you Val appreciate you stopping by.
Most welcome.
Heart racing, remembering, the need for that hand, any hand…luckily it’s in the past. So fortunate to know that hand will always be there now. Very poignant post, Michael.
Thank you Mandy, not everyone has one extended to them….this persona was lucky….
Yes indeed.
I love alliteration in the beginning and the ending is very moving, you really captured turmoil
Thank you Yves, that so good to know. Have a great day.
Oh how very moving …
Thank you Georgia, appreciate you stopping by.
🙂 And I appreciate reading your work.
You have reminded me to say a prayer for a young man who took his life when I was in high school (in the 1970’s). He was the only person I ever directly knew to take his life…
Unless I count the one woman who knew she was dying of cancer and chose to cease treatments.
Thanks for stopping by my post on the prompt.
Poignant and strong – filled with compassion and an amazing capacity for the insight of knowing that the offer can be enough to gently help someone step back from the brink …. as usual Michael a well written and sensitive piece – and flow – well – I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that it moves with a gentle force that is beautiful to read. 🙂
Thank you so much mj…..
So sad that anyone would feel this way. But – I know it happens – & one time is one too many.
Yes I agree, thanks so much for stopping by…
