Mångata – Writing Prompt # 88 – January 4, 2015 – Reflections

11

Mångata is a Swedish word for the glimmering, road-like reflection that the moon creates on water.

Its midnight

At last they are asleep

Our first day on holiday,

The summer heat has exhausted us all.

Children sleep resting for tomorrow

When new adventures will call to them.

My wife sleeping after the longest of days.

I sit and watch the Pacific

Stretch away

Across the horizon.

Under a full moon

The ocean glimmers

An unfamiliar glow to me,

The waves as if in slow motion

Rise and fall under its shimmering.

My mind conjures images

A moonlit road

Leading to ports exotic.

I smile seeing a more obvious illusion.

Once in times past

When lost, alone, disorientated

I found a woman who had also strayed.

The tussle of life, leaving us both floundering

Two aimless souls caught up in survival

Both lugging our own pathetic baggage

Believing it was what identified us.

Our meeting an opening of eyes.

We parted our own versions of mire

Saw a path, a journey of fulfilment.

Our chemistry unique

Neither believed this was possible

Every day a blessing

After ten years

Three children

Hard work

We have a home

A life.

It is true I now believe

To follow your heart

Trust in your love.

A gentle breeze caresses my cheek

I am thankful to the universe

It found a way to bring us to this point.

Like the moonlit road

We will journey onwards

I pray I reach the end

With my final breath.

Oh, I love the way you did this, Michael — and I especially like these lines: “Both lugging our own pathetic baggage / Believing it was what identified us.’ — could relate to this very much.

Let me check with Georgia about the Linky – sorry about that! o.O

Linky is up — Sorry again!

  3. Roads cross, wheels within wheels, until paths where two unlikely souls join as one. Versatile popett aren’t you.

Such fantastic imagery – painted with a pen (keystroke?) so finely hued – it leaves me smiling inwardly at such depth and feeling. The flow of this piece is wonderful – it resonates well with reflections from the present – to the past – and how it is possible to create – without even knowing or understanding the odds. Great job Michael 😀

  5. The Real Cie's avatar The Real Cie says:

It is a beautiful thing for two souls perhaps adrift to find a love to anchor them. This was a lovely work!

  6. Fabulous Michael and Jen’s quote from your work was also one of my favorite lines

Beautiful. A wordsmith at his best, painting emotions, life stories, past, present, and future.

I like the shape of your poem. It is the reflection of the moon in water disturbed by wind (or human hand or foot or bird or leaping fish or … ) The shape says as much if not more than your words, that much of what we ‘see’ can be illusion and finding that which is not, is the true road. It says more than that, too. 🙂

  9. Georgia's avatar Bastet says:

Beautifully written – such a wonderful vision, a wonderful reflection Michael … and sorry about the Linky 😦 but I’m so glad you got hold of Jen 🙂

  10. Miss Lou's avatar Miss Lou says:

I relate to the words; ‘Both lugging our own pathetic baggage. Believing it was what identified us.’

I am aware of this, and despite my best efforts, I have no doubt it interferes with how I interact in my relationships.

Thankfully (for him), some lucky fella is avoiding my baggage cause I haven’t found him yet. lol

Great words that provide comfort, Thanks Michael.
