Weeding my garden
I sense movement
To my left, a scurry
On the right a distinct rustle.
Fairy people live amongst my ferns
Small communities
Cultural centres of wonder.
Some let me in
Most don’t.
Like chameleons
They blend
In amongst the maiden hairs,
Bird’s nests, tree ferns,
Another world carrying on its business.
I see fleeting glimpses
A face, a body, a footprint
That quickly vanishes.
Tending my garden
I remove only the weeds.

I can see the Irish ancestry in your garden! If mine was populated with such interesting creatures, I would only remove the weeds too.
Thanks Gabriella we all get along fine. Look after each other so to speak.
Oh, I do like the idea of another world carrying on business in one’s garden. If I knew this were taking place it would fill me with a sense of wonder, and I wouldn’t want to disturb it either. I enjoyed your wistful write.
Thank you Mary, it is a wonder out there.
smiles…i love squirrels so when you heard the scurrying that was my first thought…i also hear the desire to be let in as well…to be a part of the much larger world…and sometimes that doesnt happen…for sure…and for whatever reason…there is much wonder in the world for those willing to notice it…smiles.
Thanks brian, life is always full of wonder.
Any advice on how one trades slugs for fairies? I would love fairies! Love the photo 🙂
Import a lizard or two to counter the slugs, for fairies just think about them and they appear.
The photo is one part of my garden where some of the nicer fairies hang out.
Really? I have lizards around the green spaces in the neighborhood. I may try to capture a few if I get the courage. I thought that might be part of your garden. It’s exactly the kind of garden I enjoy, homey and fairy-friendly.
Well my plants thrive on a good drink and a degree of neglect. The fairies of course never complain.
I have wild rabbits, cats and skunks that roam in the night around my backyard; wonder where they hide in the day…
Sounds like a lively place Anthony. Thanks for your comment.
Sadly, the fairy folk have deserted my garden. The cat is a formidable opponent although the dog would probably give them rides around the yard. There’s plenty of vegetables for them if they decide to visit.
You never know Lyn they well drop by any day now.
I suspect the fairies might think my garden is too much of a jungle, but I love the whimsical yet very matter-of-fact way in which you write about this. I was thinking Dr. Who…
Hey dr Who is fine with me. In your jungle garden they may well be in there swinging from the trees.
I’m so happy for your fairies.. personally I would be terrified of snakes if I would tend a garden in any place but where I live.. 🙂
The snakes are about but they don’t come near, well only one that I know of. Thanks Bjorn for your comment.
Fairies in your garden, slugs in mine…so it is, but I love the idea of tiny people with magical tendencies prancing in the light of day or under the moon at night 😉
It’s a sight to behold. Kathy.
I so know that corner now 😊 you should drape that tree above with fairy lights, so they can find their way in the dark.
That’s a good idea Jenny, hence the name fairy lights.
you know…if i knew there were fairies in my garden i would start weeding right now… nice bit of magic…
Thank you so much Claudia, magic is often uplifting I think.
I have the mushrooms–will have to look under them as I haven’t yet seen any wee folk dancing on the tops. A lovely thought–fairies keeping company with the chippies and bunnies, and dancing to the music of the crickets and frogs, while the fireflies light the dance floor.
If you look hard enough vb you never know what you might find. Thanks so much for the comment.
Always a pleasure reading your poetry, Michael, and a nice visit in your garden:)
Thank you Oliana, its always been a happy garden that bit, no wonder the fairies love it.
Lucky you…all the fairies have gone south here…soon you will share how hot and humid it is and I will whine how cold and slippery it is
Nature has so many tiny little worlds of busy creatures. We can walk by or take a peek. It’s always fascinating to me….spiderwebs, snails, buds sprouting…never ending business of life.
Awesome poem!!
Thank you so much, hope you have a good day.
Whimsy & magical!
Thank you so much.
