#Writephoto – Shopping

Off I go list in hand, I’ve checked it twice, underlined the really important items and still I know there is something I have forgotten.

That’s how it is.

You get into the shop and there is so much that greets your eye. We are spoiled I tell myself as I wander through the fruit and veg, so many varieties, so much choice but I put it down to a necessary evil.

We have to eat, we like to be clothed in what we think is acceptable and what makes us look our best.

I know I have become somewhat institutionalised to wandering the aisles each Saturday morning picking up the things we need for the next week.

When Covid restrictions were in place I tried home delivery and click and collect. But it just wasn’t the same as meandering around the shop looking at stuff you either would never buy or at stuff for your own health you’d never put in your trolley.

I think in the end I preferred to risk it during Covid, mask on, phone at the ready to use the QR code, hand sanitiser and off I’d go.

Going to the shop in person meant there was always the possibility of finding bargain you’d miss if you weren’t there.

I miss doing “the wandering the isles” too but with so many people without masks, safety is preferable to satisfaction.

  2. We managed to continue to do our own shopping throughout, taking full advantage of hand sanitizer stations in shops and spraying trolleys and baskets. We mask up, wore gloves at one stage, and keep away from crowds or queues as much as possible. Nothing like picking your own fruit and veg, squeezing your selected loaf of bread, and nabbing a bargain, which as you say, if not there, wouldn’t necessarily see. Even more surprising though is that we’ve actually saved money by changing the way we shop, so I’m not complaining!

I tried online shopping when the lockdown started but it wasn’t for me. Good if you’ve saved $$

      • I keep a spreadsheet to keep on track of things and so far we’ve spent less each month. I can’t say it’s because we’re not buying dog food either because Maggie’s food wasn’t that expensive. Have a good weekend Michael.

I often shop online but never for groceries. I don’t especially like grocery shopping but I do like to see and choose the food myself.

While I shopped on-line for items I might have done “traditionally,” or were hard to find on the shelves, I never stopped grocery shopping in person.
Took advantage of the early am hours set aside for “seniors” and “immune-compromised” shoppers, wore gloves (now just sanitize), masked-up (still wear doubled up cotton masks — booster in early December). Even when the level of anxiety among shoppers was very high (what a tense vibe to shop during), I kept roaming the aisles. Strangely, I think the routine of in person grocery shopping helped to keep me sane.

Great response to the prompt, Michael. I agree, I do prefer an in-person shop. I do find I slip things into my trolley that looks tempting or unusual and you just don’t see those the same way online. I do try to budget and plan my food but this year I’ve not always found the time to do that so probably spent more than I should. A good resolution for new years for me perhaps. :). Thank you so much for joining in #writephoto. KL ❤
